Barracks
The Barracks have three separate stations: Westgate, Eastgate Town (inside the town walls), and Eastgate Front (outside the town walls). Town Guard are supposed to rotate between the three but this policy is not systematically tracked or evenly enforced, leading to squabbles among the guard.
Both Westgate and Eastgate Town Barracks have nicer amenities than The Halberd and rival the conditions in Eronia Minor, which is a serious perk for the job. The Eastgate Front, however, is spartan in contrast, stocked sparingly in case the barracks would be overrun and need to be abandoned. There are other significant differences in duties at each location.
- Westgate guards are responsible for patrolling the The Market , the Waterfront & Docks, the Services & Trades Corridor, and the Entertainment District. This is the most coveted station as guards frequently receive free handouts from vendors as well as kickbacks and bribes. The captains want shorter rotations at Westgate to reduce temptation and corruption. The is a low-risk, high reward station.
- Eastgate Town guards patrol the Residential Area and sometimes lend support to the Entertainment District. Compared to Westgate, it's still relatively low-risk but also low reward. The job is dull during the day but often difficult at night once the booze starts flowing and people get carried away by passions. Two guards were killed trying to break up fights in The Korf so now it's no longer patrolled. That leaves wandering through the rest of the Residential area, deterring thieves and steering drunks away from bad decisions.
- Eastgate Front is the most stressful and least desirable post. Outside of the town walls, the Front is intended to be a defensive bulwark against threats from the east. With the Western and Northern Walls intact with heavy gated doors, the town is only exposed by the crumbling Eastern Wall that continues to sink into the marsh. In the early days of Mythrite, the town was indeed attacked on this site by a goblin band that was narrowly driven off. It then became a permanent guard post. Blasted by chill winds from the mountains, nights haunted by screeches and cries from the wilderness, and a sobering view of the Pantheon Cemetery adds to the overall misery.
