Northern Dominance

The Northern Dominance is a vast swathe of frigid tundra covering all lands north of Cretin's Gate. It is the most recent addition to The Empire borders, as it was widely considered to be far to cold to be inhabited for any great length of time.   In fact, the only people who tend to live here are Goliaths, who boast an impressive resistance to the areas freezing climate. As well as this, the area has also become home to the occasional silver or white Dragonborn and even a certain lineage of Tiefling which has a propensity for cold environments. For any other race anything more than a cursory visit to this Dominance is considered more or less impossible.   On top of the already frozen climate, during The Darkening, the entire Dominance becomes cold enough to freeze water almost as soon as it touches the air, and has to be stored in separate, magically heated containers. In fact, nothing save from magical heat or fire will generate any reasonable amount of heat during this time. Even the races who are adapted to live here will often freeze in their beds if they don't take the necessary precautions.

Geography

Nearer to the southern border, the geography exhibits some similarities to The Shards with sharp, rocky hills covering the landscape. Further north however the hills level out somewhat, and give way to forests of a particularly hardy species of tree known as an Icebark.

Fauna & Flora

Icebark trees are native to this area, and are found nowhere else on Nalan. More permanent residents describe seeing creatures refered to as Nerve Specters roaming the forests at night.

History

Up until fairly recently, the Northern Dominance was its own independent territory inhabited almost exclusively by Goliaths. However, every year a large number of the population would make their way south to Cretin's Gate in order shelter from the Darkening.   Over time, the offer was made to incorporate the north as part of the empire. As with most places, very few disadvantages could be seen, and numerous villages of Goliaths made the decision to join.

Tourism

Absolutely no one, save for races with a particular like for frosty climates, visits here. If people were to come here on holiday it could be fatal without proper preparation.
