Schola Magus
Founded in the mid-Second Age, the Schola Magus was and is the foremost organization focused on magical education in Kalin.
Having undergone many changes since its inception in the mid-Second Age, the Schola Magus is currently based on the island of Olbern, with Branches in every national capital across Kalin and other major cities. This is has led to questions of political influence, as Olbern is now a province of the Impero Tharrisian, but on the whole the Schola Magus is seen as mostly independent.
Unlike other private magical education institutions or general education institutions, the Schola Magus doesn't consider financial status when admitting members, purely talent and potential.
The Schola Magus also has a secondary objective beyond education. The Schola Magus and its militant arm, the Schola Custodi, are responsible for maintaining records relating to the Magical Registry Compact, as well as its enforcement.
Structure
The Schola Magus is essentially split into two halves in the common day.
One half focuses on the education aspect of the organization. It maintains its branches across the continent, which are run much like other colleges and universities. It also maintains and keeps records for its various libraries across the continent.
The other half focuses on its objective to enforce the Magical Registry Compact. This means it manages the Schola Custodi and all related logistics that involves, as well as the management of the untold records of every registered magical user across the continent. It also is responsible for the dispensation of Schola Custodi for guard duty across its branches.
Public Agenda
- To educate and preserve magical knowledge in the world, independent of any political or secular interests.
- Maintain a registry of all magically talented or trained people across Kalin, as well as the enforcement against those who do not comply.
Assets
The Schola Magus Headquarters on Olbern are impressive for their magical construction and size, but still pales in comparison to the Schola Magus of old.
It also maintains Branches in every national capital across the continent where the majority of education is done, along with Schola Custodi barracks and holding cells around the continent.
History
The Schola Magus has undergone many changes over the generations. It was originally a single hard-to-reach university far below ground. Then it grew to have its central campus in addition to branches in every major Fallen City.
The largest change though, came during the Return at the end of the Second Age. The opening assault of the Return was aimed at the Schola Magus itself. Dark Drow and creatures of the Return and Underdark invaded the Schola Magus and destroyed its main campus utterly. Some managed to escape during the initial attack, and more managed to escape thanks to the efforts of the Blessed Dead, but its now estimated nearly 70% of the staff and students on the main campus died in the assault.
After the victory of the Blessed Dead at The Fall of the Return, one of the Blessed Dead, Valmir (The Father of Knowledge), pushed for the refoundation of the organization. This was largely successful, with the institution creating new Headquarters on Olbern, and growing out its branches to be more robust.
The Schola Magus would spend much of the next centuries busy rebuilding and then studying the changes in magic that took place during The Shifting.
Its course would be slightly altered with the Tharrisian Annexation of Olbern, with many foreign powers claiming that the Schola Magus was now a puppet of Tharrisia. The truth of this is still disputed, but most agree that the organization has stayed remarkably independent of Tharrisia for the most part.
Later, the Schola Magus would be key in the Signing of the Magical Registry Compact. After much political back and forth, the signing of the compact handed over the responsibility of both maintaining the Compact's Records as well as its enforcement via the Schola Custodi.
