General Description
This picturesque farming town of 1125 or so folk stands where the Starwater Road meets the High Road and the latter crosses the Starwater River by means of a broad stone bridge. Small and quiet, Eveningstar is a prosperous farmers' market and travelers' waystop. It lies across the mouth of a rocky gorge that carries the Starwater River down into Cormyr from its source. The Eveningstar Gorge provides the only easy route up into the dangerous mountains north of the Forest Kingdom. It's the only major break in a craggy limestone escarpment that stands like a wall along the High Road from Tyrluk to near Arabel and bars easy northward expansion for Cormyr. There are many tracks and scrambles up and down the Stonecliff, but no other routes by which mounted people or livestock less agile than goats and sheep can pass from Cormyr to the high moors of the Stonelands and vice versa. The gorge itself is thickly grown with thickets and scrub woodland and is the favorite playground of bolder local children, who in season pick many baskets of berries there. Eveningstar itself is full of trees and gardens. The village rises out of the surrounding farms “like an orchard with buildings in it,” as Elminster says. It is dominated by the Stonecliff and the prosperous fields of the House of the Morning, a handsome spired temple of Lathander that sprawls in the mouth of the gorge. No other temples or shrines exist in Eveningstar, but the local lord allows temporary shrines to be set up Evenor farmers keep sharrada (Sharrada are long-horned, hardy beef cattle covered with shaggy fur. They can survive in harsher cold than Humans.) and sheep in the walled common land of the High Pasture on the edge of the Stonelands plateau. The farmers gather once every six days for a market, bringing produce that is often snapped up by visiting caravans. Eveningstar produces wine, parchment, wool, milk, cheese, eggs, poultry, mutton, beans, carrots, and parsnips. The village is a favorite stopover for overland caravans. Most caravan masters are good friends of owner of the Lonesome Tankard, one of the best inns to be found anywhere. On many soft summer evenings, dozens of caravan masters can be seen fishing from the Starwater bridge, enjoying a pipe or two, or strolling the evening streets. Even more caravan guards are often seen bathing in one of the Starwater's swimming holes to drive off the dust and sweat of the road, then putting on their best and slipping out to the Low Eveningstar (demonym: Evenor) is a pastoral village of about 1,000 surrounded by fields and orchards situated in an elbow of the Starwater River just north of the King's Forest in Cormyr. It stands at the intersection of the High Road, which runs west to High Horn and East to Arabel, and the Skywater Road (known by locals as the "Suzail Road" or "Southrun"), which runs south to the village of Dhedluk in the King's Forest. Immediately to the north of Eveningstar is the Starwater Gorge. The gorge, formed by the Starwater River as it flows down from the Storm Horn Mountains, provides relatively easy access to the Helmlands and the Storm Horns and is the only significant break in the limestone Stonecliff that runs from Tyrluk to the west to just short of Arabel. Eveningstar is an agricultural community producing primary products such as milk, eggs, poultry, mutton, carrots, beans and parsnips, as well as value-added goods such as cheese, parchment, wool and wine; all of which are sold at a weekly farmer's market. Eveningstar is also a popular stopover for frequent overland caravans, who patronize the local farmers and businesses.People
Evenor folk are friendly, easy-going, and peace-loving, with little desire to adventure or roam. They fear the evil said to lurk in the Stonelands, and openly hate the Zhentarim and others of violence, such as brigands and outlaws. Evenor folk are proud of the realm to which they belong, and are by and large content with life as it is. They enjoy the news that caravans bring, but don't consider themselves "lesser citizens" than those of Suzail, Sembia, or Waterdeep just because Eveningstar is small. They do enjoy a good scandal; gossip is the chief village sport. For decades, Eveningstar was ruled by Tessaril Winter, a local mage who was forced to abdicate following the onset of the Spellplague. After the chartered adventuring company and local celebrities the Ebon League overthrew the appointed Lord, Reardon Cormaeril, they established an interim government under Tessaril's apprentice, Shevaril Starcloak, a half-elven girl who is popular with the common people. She currently rules with assistance of a council formed of Eveningstar's most prominent citizens in several areas of expertise. Adventurers such as the Ebon League provide the chief local source of entertainment—not just by providing villagers with newcomers to bet on or speculate about, but by telling and retelling their exploits. Stirring tales dominate many evenings at the Tankard, but Evenors take delight most when such deeds intersect their own.Inns
Lonesome Tankard
Propietor Rating The Lonesome Tankard is a tavern and inn famous in Cormyr for its fresh, home cooked meals and is regarded as one of the best stopovers for merchants, caravaners, and adventurers in all of Cormyr. Thanks to a longstanding arrangement between the proprietor and the Ruldo family, guest's of the Tankard can stable their horses across the way at the Ruldo stables free of charge. This busy and at times overcrowded inn and tavern also serves as Eveningstar’s restaurant. Inside, it’s warm and inviting in a rustic roadhouse sort of way. Most of the villagers gather here to dine every night or to chat over a quaff of ale later in the evening. The Tankard’s fame is increasing steadily as more and more caravan travelers discover it. It’s famous as a past base of the Knights of Myth Drannor and the former favorite stopover of the Ring’s Men when Azoun was a young prince-adventurer in that band. The Tankard is run by Dunman Kiriag, a jovial, kind man who’s deadly with a hurled dagger but seemingly a friend to everyone. Dunman has betrayed great strength from time to time: Regulars love to tell the tale of how he somehow sensed a brigand was outside with a crossbow. He raised a table to use as a shield just instants before a bolt burst in through a window, then hurled the table clear across the taproom and out that window to fell the foe outside in the night!20 The Tankard has two floors of guest bedchambers, a rentable private meeting and/or dining room off the main taproom, and no stables. Dunman rents stalls in the stables due west, across the road for the use of his guests. The Lonesome Tankard is an enjoy- able—and very reasonable—place to stay in pleasant surroundings that is strategically located at the juncture of two major trade roads. As many caravan merchants have found, it’s an ideal stop. Caravans can camp due east of the inn, across the river, and use the Starwater freely for bathing and watering their beasts. What could be better? The Hailing Hand
Propietor Rating This recently rebuilt inn was built on the burnt out foundations of the old Welcomas well as nuts, fruits, and vegetables sufficient to feed both the temple and the entire town if needed. Hailing Hand, though this establishment has little in common with its predecessor beyond the name. It is a rowdy and lively establishment that attracts a younger crowd than the rusticTankard or quiet Unicorn
Propietor Rating It is popular with adventurers recently returned from a successful job, and the sorts of people who make their livings lightening the purses of such adventurers. The Golden Unicorn:
Propietor Rating This quiet, discreet tavern is popular among merchant traders, local businessmen, and others who need an atmosphere conducive to conducting business.Eveningstar
1: Temple (Greater) of Lathander
Known as the ‘Jewel of the Community', this temple is one of Eveningstar's best-known monuments. It is a frequent stop for adventurers, merchants, and travelers looking for aid. It is Eveningstar's largest building, and even the occasional passer-by takes note of the years of hard work that local folk have put into it. Above its mighty doors is a large ivory sculpture of the Morning Lord spreading his rays over a field. Anyone who enters is humbly greeted by the temple Acolytes, who then explain that the temple is divided into three sections: the main hall, the healing hall, and the crafting hall. The main hall is used for morning prayers, Sunday schooling, religious inquiries, and other forms of mundane use. The main hall is described as a long, elaborate room with endless wooden and ivory sculptures of the Morning Lord and his closest servants, spreading light all across the world. There are enough chairs to accommodate to the entire population of Eveningstar. The healing hall is to the right of the main hall, and has several beds and Morning lord shrines. In the healing hall, adventurers can receive aid from the temple priests that have specialized in cure and restoration spells. Naturally, good aligned characters receive benefits, as do any who serve Lathander or prove themselves worthy to the temple. On the left is the crafting hall, where various potions and wands associated with healing spells are sold. The temple is run by a married couple who themselves used to adventure together, but have now founded this temple to Lathander for the sake of serving adventurers. The husband, Father Bedwyr (LG male Human Ftr 1/Cle of La 9) is in charge of the healing hall. The wife, Mother Aryan (CG female Elf Cle of La 10) is in charge of the crafting hall. However they may bicker back and forth, both Father Bedwyr and Mother Aryan are capable and willing to help adventurers. Travelers simply must pray that either father Bedwyr or mother Aryan help them, and not both in the same room; lest they find themselves witness to another one of their petty, seemingly endless feuds.3: Guard Po
st: the guards of Eveningstar are all soldiers of the Purple Dragon Army. Your average guard (LN/LG male human Ftr1-4) carries splint mail, a large steel shield, a masterwork heavy crossbow with twenty bolts, and a masterwork bastard sword. The guard posts are made of wood, and for size purposes are identical to a guard tower (see Stronghold Builder's Guide ), with three levels. At any time there are 1d3+1 guards at a post, and at every post is an alarm. If one alarm is sounded, then all alarms in all other posts are set off. This immediately brings all of the soldiers in Eveningstar to arms, including those in the shelters for Arabel Soldiers.Tessaril Winter's Estate
When first looking at Tessaril's estate, one wouldn't guess that it was the home of a noblewoman and much as a crafter's guild-house. Against the wishes of her cabinet, Tessaril did not wish for her home to belittle the people of her town, and wanted it to give the image that she herself was worth no more than the average commoner. Tessaril does not keep servants in her home, nor any other worker to do her chores for her: she sees such professions aimed towards the comfort of one individual as inefficient. Instead, Tessaril enjoys the company of Eveningstar's finest craftsmen, particularly the two town smiths, Gaelden and Penden (brothers). She will often buy weapons and armor directly from them, planning to imbue them to sell to adventurers looking for magic arms and armor. Unfortunately, Tessaril soon loses her temper towards indecisiveness, which in her book entails browsing. Nevertheless, Tessaril keeps a wide variety of magic items due to her extensive study in the Art before inheriting Eveningstar from her Mother. She despises vanity, and prefers the honesty of her people to the chatter of her cabinet; aristocrats live inefficiently, where as merchants and builders accomplish things. The two guard posts in front of her home are not in place to protect it, but to alert her immediately if the town were ever in trouble. During the recent Goblin raids, Tessaril has unquestionably been the first individual to engage them. If she's not fending off a raid, crafting amongst her people, dismissing complaining cabinet members, or caring affectionately for her pet Tressym, she is testing her fortitude towards intoxication in the local Inn. Naturally, the bar tender knows very well what Tessaril's alcohol limit is, and never allows her to exceed it by too much. She is a busy woman, after all.5: Barracks & Armory
At any one time, there are 6d4 soldiers inside the barracks. The barracks, much like the rest of Eveningstar, are totally open to the public, and in many regards is taken less seriously than it should be. There is an instructor in the barracks, as well as a training facility. All members of the purple dragon army are given free instruction, however adventurers who may wish to be trained (see the Training section of the Dungeon Master's Guide) must pay 50gp at the door per day of instruction, or 25gp to simply make personal use of the training facility.#6: Shelter for Arabel's Troops
When Myrmeen Lhal explained to Tessaril that she needed accommodations for the remainder of her army, Tessaril and her crafters took that request as more of a challenge than a favor. Within a sort week they constructed enough shelter for Arabel's entire army, and some. This included a base of operations, a training ground, two wooden walls (one on the east side, one on the west), an office for the War Wizard Tsharliira (who liked it so much that she remained in Eveningstar), several armories, and their own private Smithery. After Arabel was won back, most of the purple dragon soldiers returned back to Arabel, however several battalions were ordered by Myrmeen to remain in Eveningstar. Myrmeen found Eveningstar to be a valuable contingency location, should Arabel be attacked again in its shaken state. Myrmeen was also fairly disappointed in the state of Eveningstar's military force, and insisted that Tessaril enforce a greater amount of discipline amongst her people. Tessaril, who deeply enjoyed Eveningstar's easy-going way of life, dismissed Myrmeen's plea, and explained that Eveningstar was safe inside of the King's Forest. Nevertheless, a fair portion of Myrmeen's more regimented troops, along with the War Wizard Tsharliira, are now helping take care of Eveningstar, and at any one time there are 4d4 soldiers in each shelter. These new troops have been fundamental in defending Eveningstar from the recent raids. Unfortunately, there have also been several conflicts of interest between Arabel's old soldiers, and the peaceful people of Eveningstar, most of which having to do with the security of the town. Tsharliira has argued time and time again that additional walls should be built on the northern and southern ends of the town. Tessaril replied ‘It will entertain me, good War Wizard, if any of the Goblins even attempt to cultivate the Eveningstar Mansion and its surrounding area. And as for the south, well, lets just say a ‘mutual' friend of ours has everything… under control”. Tessaril was of course referring to the fabled ‘Gray Guardian' to the town's south.7 Blue Leaf Tree, Portal to Suzail:
This monumental blue leaf tree (Gargantuan Size category) was left standing when the town of Eveningstar was built for one purpose: to serve as a location for the Portal. Unlike most Portals made out of stone or metal, this would was carved into the side of the tree. The Portal is the most heavily guarded part of the town, since it is more is less out in the open. At any one time, there are 6d4 guards protecting it, not including the guards in the two nearby towers. Even Tessaril does not know much about the cleric that constructed this portal, other than that she shortly after ventured east, most likely to Arabel. Before leaving, the cleric entrusted one of Tessaril's soldiers with a seal that could potentially cause the portal to malfunction permanently, should the need ever arise. Unfortunately, the town as attack shortly after, and the soldier slain without the seal being recovered. Rumor has it that the seal in kept secretly in the Eveningstar Mansion, this is not certain and by Tessaril's logic, unreasonable (nothing living could ever survive enough to hide something in that Mansion). Tessaril would be willing pay a hefty sum of gold for that seal, but understands that ever seeing it again is extremely unlikely. The symbol itself was said to have the shape of a leaf from a blue leaf tree, with the symbol of Mielikki on it in golden writing.19 Saelen's Adventuring Shop:
Old man Saelen, a veteran adventurer himself, has put together on the northern most point of the town, a shop dedicated entirely towards adventuring. In it, one can find almost any mundane item that an adventurer might need, particularly adventuring gear. In here, adventurers will be able to find many different types of items all in one place, but won't be able to get anything truly customary. Saelen likes to keep standard adventuring items in his shop.21 & 24 Town Halls, New and Old
The New Town hall was constructed along with the Shelters for Arabel's troops so as to act as a center of operations for the Arabelian Soldiers. Now it's used by the War Wizard Tsharliira as a conference room, where she can try and stay up to date with all of Eveningstar's matters. Unfortunately, where the majority of Tessaril's cabinet will attend Tsharliira's meetings, Tessaril won't; Tessaril finds one Town Hall inefficient, let alone two.25 Rowan's Home
Generally speaking, Eveningstar is a relaxed town. It does have, however, one tremendously dire rule, “No one disturbs the Southern Woods”. Foolish adolescent boys will see how long they can keep their back to the trees without giving into fear at night. But other than that, none of the locals will willingly enter it. For the southernwoods of Eveningstar are home to a beast known only as ‘the Gray Guardian'. Unbeknownst to the commoners of Eveningstar, residing in those same southernwoods is a Daleswoman Elf by the name of Rowan (CN female elf Rgr 6/Drd 6). Tessaril met Rowan once, who explained the very nature of ‘The Gray Guardian' to her in order to ensure that her woods would remain placid. Myth's about the Gray Guardian are that it is a 12 foot high beast, with a mouth that could swallow a man whole. Its arms could rip trees in two as if they were rags, and its skin (as it's name would suggest) is Gray. The truth is surprisingly close to the myth, for the Gray Guardian is actually a Gray Render Beast (see Monster Manual) that has been impressed upon Rowan. Rowan, however, was sure to not tell Tessaril about how her Gray Render was naturally a herbivore: the rumor that such a beast is a carnivore keeps pesky children out of her resort. Rowan is actually Eveningstar's oldest citizen, for she is the only one still alive that can remember when the town was built. Initially, a rogue Gray Render was attacking the builders of Eveningstar constantly. They summoned Rowan from Mistledale (who was already a well accomplish Ranger and Druid) to deal with this Render. She soon found that the Render had impressed itself upon her, causing it to follow her wherever she may go, and protect her and the territory around her at all costs. She knew that it was impossible to stop the Humans from creating a town there, but at the same time Rowan wished to keep much of this precious wood intact. And so, when she returned to the people of the new town, she explained that ‘the Gray Guardian wanted to make a deal'. To this day, the town of Eveningstar stands undisturbed by the Render, provided it itself isn't disturbed by the townsfolk. Rumor has it that Rowan is also the cause behind the high density of Tressym in the town. Tressym are most abundant on the southern brush, and some townsfolk have even reporting seeing Tressym litters no more that a couple of yards in the forest. Although why Rowan would so heavily promote the spread of Tressym in Eveningstar is not totally known, Tessaril believes that Rowan is doing it too keep the southern farmers too occupied to get any ideas about bugging her and her Render. This cozy, quiet, back-street place run by Selda Imyara takes the overflow from the more popular Tankard and is often used by nobles who desire discretion. It has separate entrance stairs for some of its suites that open directly to the outside, and it offers its own private stables. Prices are slightly higher here than at the Tankard, and no provender is to be had beyond melted cheese sandwiches, ale, minted ice water, and house wine. But this is a pleasant enough place, quiet and luxuriously furnished—a hidden gem.The Low Lantern
Propietor Rating This establishment is a tavern, dance hall, and theater all in one, and it is often noisy and crowded enough that it seems to be a stockyard, too! The Lantern is run by the pretty and spirited Maea “Iron Eyes” Dul- gussir, who apparently keeps some discreet magic to defend herself and the Lantern with. The place is popular because it's so cozy and welcoming, from the dark-eyed escorts to the crackling fires by the gaming tables. Traveling minstrels stop here often to provide music for dancers and melancholy midnight drinkers and often leave laden with extra coins thrown their way by appreciative listeners. The Lantern is thoroughly enjoyable. If this place served any food beyond smoked oysters and overly salty garlic-buttered biscuits, and if it were a little less crowded, it'd be top-rated. It is a pleasant surprise for the traveler in such a small village. Lovers of wine should ask Shareen to show them the cellars. They hold some pleasant surprises, ranging from ruby-and-gold elverquisst to alurlyath from distant Undermountain. I heartily recommend an evening out here.Rooming Houses
Eveningstar has two rooming houses:Tethyr's court
Propietor Rating Tethyr’s Court is owned by the busy Arbold Tethyr and run by his wife and eight live- in maids. It is cheery and clean but unexciting.Olffs Rest
Propietor Rating Olff’s Rest is even less inspiring. Guests can rent rooms at either house by the tenday or month for 1 sp per night, stabling included. No meals are covered in this fee, and there’s no singlenight rate. Travelers unable to get into the Tankard or Unicorn have to pay for a tenday even if they only intend to stay one night.Shops
Orsborg's Adornments
Propietor Katrin Orsborg Rating Orsborg's is an Evenor institution and has been providing body adornment services, from simple shaves and hair styling to custom scented perfumes and intricate tattoo artistry, for nearly two centuries. The current owner, Katrin Orsborg, leads a team of artists and craftsmen who have perfected their respective crafts. Adventurers heading to the Haunted Halls often stop by the shop to get matching tattoos to commemorate their expedition, leading to a steady supply of customers. Vilnar Orsborg provides body adornment services to Evenor citizens and visitors alike. His shop is situated in a prime location between the Lonesome Tankard and Tessaril's Tower. The shop is also his home; he lives upstairs. Orsborg is a fat, waddling, cheery man whose loud clothes and louder speech conceal a calm competency at money matters, barbering, and the application of tattoos with some artistry. His skill with the money he earns is surprising. He's grown very wealthy through buying and selling property all over Cormyr, and he owns almost an entire street in Suzail. Ask local ladies to show you their Orsborg adornments and you're likely to get slapped. Their husbands, however, proudly display their own smaller depictions of gauntlets, family arms, crossed swords, and Purple Dragons—and tell you about whatever of Orsborg's work their wives sport. Orsborg's work has smooth, swirling curves and vivid hues and has even attracted the attention of distant Calishite satraps, who send a few of their folk every year to be tattooed. Orsborg is also an expert perfumer. Orsborg’s is an Evenor institution and has been providing body adornment services, from simple shaves and hair styling to custom scented perfumes and intricate tattoo artistry, for nearly two centuries. Type Print Shop Propietor Baskar Lendo Rating This dusty crowded shop (a former granary) in the back streets of Eveningstar is the home and shop of Baskar Lendo, a tall but stooped, thin, nervous man whose failing eyesight makes him peer at everything like of the heartlands of Cormyr. He is a great Font of Knowledge about Cormyr's past and has made a special study of the deeds and misdeeds of nobles and adventurers. In his print shop, Baskar makes and sells inks and parchment and produces handbills for hire. A sample of one of his handbills reads:For Hire: One Adventuring Band Bold and capable. No job too small.
Discretion guaranteed. Proud of our charter! Contact Thorl at the Low Lantern.
Baskar also produces a broadsheet paper, the Cormyr Clarion. This singlesheet paper makes fascinating reading for the visitor. It lays bare the current gossip and doings of the folk of Eveningstar, from who's been interviewed by Purple Dragons recently to who won the last game of jacks at the Tankard. It also features both news of upcoming local sales and events and a rather salacious rumors column whose snide comments are alone worth the 2-cp cost of the Clarion.

Hidden House
The very existence of this maze of ever-changing walls and passages is a state secret of Cormyr. The Hidden House was once the abode of the Netherese sorcerer Phaeryl and can be reached through a portal in the uppermost room of Tessaril’s Tower. There are no maps of the Hidden House, and such a map would be worthless anyway as doors seem to open to different rooms and passages each time they are opened.Notable Inhabitants

House of the Morning
Under the leadership of Patriarch Charisbonde “Trueservant” Belon, this wealthy and influential temple complex to Lat ander farms and invests in the new businesses and bold ventures of others with vigor and enthusiasm. The 28 priests under Belon include the wary sarcastic Jelde Asturien, a retired Knight of Myth Drannor who serves as the temple's secular liaison. Among his other duties, he tries to uncover fraud and misuse of Lathander's bounty by keeping an eye on folk who've taken temple money to aid them in their ventures. Jelde and his fellow senior priests command several powerful magical items and a willing work force of 170 resident lay followers. They run a very successful farm that produces herbs, nuts, plants for use in scents and medicines, and enough food to see to all village and temple needs. The temple feeds and houses guests of most good and neutral faiths for a nightly fee. Healing services are performed unstint- ingly, but the fees are steep enough to see the entire temple through a lean decade, not just a bad year!
