Third Place

A large, welcoming bookstore in the City of Mercy, named for the store owner Piras' hope: to create a place that is outside of people's work/school and home that they feel comfortable coming to and creating a community in. The selection is nothing to sneeze at, though it's not necessarily why people come to visit.

Design

The bookstore is one very large room, with smaller sections set aside here and there, denoted by rugs underneath each sitting area or lounge. There are many chairs around of varying sizes, plushness, and upholstries. Each chair typically has a table or desk nearby or is arranged with others into a small communal area. The sturdy oak shelves are not too tall, with little stools readily available around for people to use as needed.

Entries

Two doors in the front and one on the side (typically only used for loading/unloading shipments but not technically off limits).

Sensory & Appearance

  • The abundance of natural light paired with small reading lamps by each seating area and overhead chandeliers for the bookshelves means it's always well-lit for reading or browsing.
  • The entire area is designed to feel comfortable and welcoming; while technically it is a store, Piras has designed it to feel as quaint and homey as a friend's living room.
  • The floors are flagstone, but covered with many rugs to muffle walking. There is sometimes a bard playing soft music on the small stage in the front, but otherwise it tends to be library-like quiet with people naturally adopting a low murmur when talking. It feels conspiratorial, like a private conversation you're sharing with someone despite being in a public space, almost magically secure.
  • The rugs and windows help insulate the stone and keep it from being too drafty typically.
The store smells of books, obviously, but also the light scent of baked goods and loamy earth.

Architecture

A stone building, like many in the City of Mercy, but with higher ceilings than most and almost entirely lit by large windows around the facade.
