Jovirenia

The sky is usually tinted purple, and the plants and grass are usually found to be some variation on purple or red. They have a high number of powerful electrical storms that occur almost on a daily basis. When combined with their long coastline, this results in some spectacularly powerful weather. This makes the country a long-standing site for a lot of magical rituals involving meteorology. Even the ones that don’t specifically require immense electrical storms, the casters seem to enjoy the impressive background it gives.   Jovirenia is a place of swirling fantasy, more so than most of the countries of the Overlord world. Mostly because its appearance lends itself naturally to a sense of other-worldliness, but also because the people of this country had some rather eccentric fashion designers in its early history who basically decided that a pseudo-medieval look was the only way to go. The people have embraced this reputation and now pretty much everything except the capitol building is set in the “ye olde” style of the more lurid fantasy novels.   The crown jewel of this country is the Sky’s Knife. It is a magnificent building, standing at a hundred stories high, a large silver spike that can be seen for miles around. Aside from being a highly impressive piece of architecture, it is energy efficient when one considers that the lightning the building attracts is channeled back into the building’s power systems. The official insignia of this country goes very well with the landscape: blood-red thorny roses on a purple field.

History

The traditional title is Emperor or Empress. The current ruler is Empress Augustyna Mal’dor, a transplant from Earth who was originally called Amanda. She was initially abducted when she was five, as a potential candidate for the role of child advisor. She promptly escaped and got loose into the Sky’s Knife, where she wrought chaos and destruction with a surprisingly maniacal laugh for a five-year-old. Because of this response she was passed over for the advisor role and was sent home, but when she was sixteen she was surreptitiously tested, and when her results were deemed satisfactory she was abducted again and offered the role of Overlord Potential. In other words, an heir for the current emperor. She accepted, with the same glee she expressed as a five-year-old deconstructing a room full of armaments.   She was not expected to take up the role for at least a decade, but Emperor Togarmus Grink suffered a serious accident during a heroic attack and was forced into early retirement just one year after she arrived. Most of the world held its breath waiting to see how this teenage girl would adapt now that she was stuck in a leadership role.   Not only did she take to the role, she thrived. She dyed her hair red to match the country’s official colors, and promptly performed a dramatic magical ceremony on a high cliff on the coast that wound up on the cover of Magical Digest and won awards for “Most Impressive Display of Power”.
