"The Laurel Belt? Very pretty - view from a safe distance."

Geography
The Laurel Belt is an asteroid belt which stretches approximately 1.4 million miles and orbits the star (often called Vik) in
The Victalis System. The belt maintains an orbit in line with the planet
Laurels, which sits between the belt and the star.
Parts of it can often be seen pictured in images of the planet. It is said to be what gave the
Peacekeepers the idea to call it Laurels, as it hangs around the planet somewhat like a crown if viewed from the correct perspective.
Ecosystem
It should be noted that while for millennia it was assumed that the Laurel Belt was uninhabitable, there is more recent evidence to suggest that forms of life are said to have been seen in and around them. Not enough research has been done into what these forms of life are and what value they might bring to The Alliance, if any, but the possibility is there.
History
The Laurel Belt has been the site of over 790 thousand shipwrecks since the discovery of the star system in 2837 PT almost 2 millennia ago. It might actually be faster to list out those spacecraft that have managed to enter the belt and leave still able to support life.
In the last 500 years, the majority of these crashes have been caused by faulty navigation systems misdirecting craft. Some of this was due to the different calendar used by the
Lcha. There are certain times of the year when it is possible to approach one side of Laurel from outside of the system without running into the asteroid belt due to the separate orbits of the planet and the asteroids. However, these are more easily identified using the
Lcha calendar than by the Peacekeeper Standard, which is based on the
P'Ache Star System. The computer systems in certain craft weren't able to cope with the calculations of simply miscalculated the ideal approach based on the time of year.
