OttD Session 8: Doors are surprisingly complicated

General Summary

(Pestle was absent for this session)   The party begins the session by having a long rest in the church. Penguin visits Tornac's dreams. He informs Tornac that his assigned duty is to help him claim the throne of Avernus. Penguin also instructs him to "stop giving evil a bad name".   They then travel through Sconce's wardrobe to Sigil. Tornac takes minor damage getting trampled by pedestrians on the other side, but the party is otherwise uninjured. They also stop by Warehouse 19, but ultimately did not make any purchases.   They went to The Window, intent on joining the organization. Jane meets them at the desk, and gives them a long speech about how dangerous it is. The party, after some reserved discussion, eventually decides to throw caution to the wind and take the job anyway. They briefly meet with Pixo, who gives them a contract to sign. Zerrof carefully reads the documents, and they remind him of the papers he signed to join the military. They sign their names, and for the group name Tornac writes in "The Celestial Murderers". Vun Roade and Zerrof are then given metallic armbands which Jane describes as "panic buttons", and Tornac receives a tuning fork.   The party is then escorted to a door and steps through it. Tornac is first through the door, and rolls a 59 on The Random Plane Table. The party arrives at a deserted island, emerging from a shipwreck. Through an inordinate number of perception and investigation checks, The party searches the island and finds no noticeable landmarks. Using the tuning fork, Vun Roade concludes that they need a particular object to pass through the door.   Zerrof explores under the sea, and encounters a hungry sea spawn. He manages some basic communication with it in aquan, but does not learn anything significant. While this is happening, Tornac sets of a landmine on the vessel and is flung into the ocean, but not seriously injured. Vun Roade finds a journal from the owner of the vessel. It is mostly insane ramblings, but they do see a map indicating they are on a deserted island in Prime Material Plane. The coast of Afniria can be seen far to the west, but they decide to attempt traveling back through the door from which they came instead.   The party goes back underwater together to speak to the sea spawn again. Zerrof is given a chest containing 137.5 gold. Tornac recovers a barrel of fish. The party returns to shore, and decides to give the sea spawn the barrel of fish. The party then spends considerable time figuring out how to return through the doorway. Ultimately, the solution is to travel through the door while carrying a seashell. Afterwards, the party returns to The Window, where they are made official members. Zerrof is issued a copy of the Tikipedia. Vun Roade and Zerrof return their armbands.   The party then goes to a nearby tavern, The Bloated Sunfish, to unwind and plan their next move. Jane stops by to issue the party their badges and check on Zerrof. Penguin drops by to congratulate them, give Vun Roade one of the "panic button" armbands, advises Zerrof to "figure out why Mazu is hiding", and tells Tornac that he wants to see the temple of Istus. After this, Penguin steals Tornac's drink and departs the tavern.
