Raj

Raj is the Eshti term for kingdom. In the old city-states of the Eshtem, before they fled across the sea, there were no kingdoms, though the heads of the most powerful merchant houses held power greater than those raji in the interior of Utanar. After settling in Kalmasa, it was not long before the surviving great houses began to take territories and establish their own raji. After the establishment of the Kalmasan Samraj, these independent raji became defacto provinces. This indignity has chafed at many of the great houses, especially after the loss of the War of Sovereignty and setbacks in Barendar.
