Canus Cato
Mayor of Derta
Observations from the Locals of Derta
"Canus is a good man. He upholds order and sees that people stay in line, but he could do better. He could make doing good, actual good, his moral compass - not just upholding the law. Also, he needs to learn that laughing is does not always make a situation easier."
-Guardswoman & Hunter Camillia Fara
"Thick as thieves we are. No one could even come between me and Canus, not even our wives. Don't let them hear me say that though, I'll be sleeping in the stables for a week. Canus does things I don't understand, but that's just fine. He's my brother and I love him and I'll always support him, because he is a man of law and order. Society needs those, especially now."
-Innkeeper Lars Cato
"Mayor Canus Cato is the right man to be mayor. He has the trust of the people, and he in turn has placed his trust in the institutions of government. Those who would question my decision to make him mayor do not know Canus. They do not understand that he will repay my acknowledgement of him, because they do not know law is his bone and order his muscle. Together they animate him and for him to defy the Church (and thusly me) would be anathema to his being."
-Head Priest Kaeso

Information for the Gamemaster
Canus Cato does not factor good or evil into his decisions. He only considers law and order. He is likely to let even women and children die if it means a greater number will survive. Though these types of decisions may anger those in the community who are hurt by them, overall the community is willing to let Canus make those choices. They trust in him, and know none of them would willing wear that mantle and its heavy burdens.

Canus is the mayor, judge, and tithe collector for the settlement of Derta on the outskirts of Dertosa. He is well liked by the townsfolk and was made an official member of the clergy by the local priest. He is not originally from Estrye, is silent on his past when it comes up - often trying to deflect any inquiries, but through wholly committing to Estrye he has become an official citizen. He is the younger brother of the local Innkeeper and is close to his brother. He is honorable and reliable, not overly zealous in Pharism, and is only the enemy of those in defiance of Estrye's laws.
