Westlund

The western province of the Kingdom of Asturia, formally called the Duchy of Westlund.

Geography

The western reaches of Asturia are a mix of grassy savannas, rugged badlands, and isolated mountains. Redwall Citadel, the capital of Westlund, resides at the base of Red Ridge near the center point of The Veldt. The verdant Tygus Valley lies to the south, and the frequently travelled Midvale Pass to the east that connects the province to the Plains of Astur. North of the Citadel is a vast, open plain that is mostly devoid of permanent settlements.   The westernmost border of Westlund is defined by the Maendros River which snakes its way from the north, around the Veldt and down to the sea. This river neatly divides the human kingdom from the lands of the Anasazi to the west.   Westlund is dominated by the Veldt. A vast, wild grassland interspersed with drier, rockier, badlands. The northernmost end is nearly devoid of any human towns or villages. Various tribes of Odakota orcs roam these plains in search of game which they hunt during the dry season and then retreat to their permanent settlements to the north when the rains come. The few known Odakota settlements are far to the north but include Standing Rock and Silver Creek. In the central part of the province lies Harrowcrown, a large mountain that has great spiritual significance to the Odakota tribes that inhabit the region. Many ruins of the Anasazi lizardfolk also dot the land around the mountain, hinting of a time before the coming of Astur.   Far to the south of Redwall lies the Tygus Valley. This region is technically no longer part of Westlund as it was given to the Deepstone Dwarves by King Bannon Koreleth after they came to the aid of the kingdom during the Shadow War. Many dwarves, particularly those who wish to keep true to the “old ways” reside deep within their mountain city of New Greysmere and nearby surface town of Rostock.   The Maendros River creates a natural border between the lands of Asturia and the Crimson Lowlands beyond. On this border, a day and a half’s travel from the city of Kalm, stands the Great Lift. This wondrous device was constructed with engineering savvy of the dwarves, the mechanical genius of the kobolds and the resourcefulness of the Asturian people. This massive machine can transport large quantities of men and materials between the upper, eastern side of the cliffs to the badlands over a mile below.
