GR 15: Final Betrayal

Lord Grenton had led the Kainen people to the gate of Auvorené, prior to its closing by the “Left Hand” party. Sertidon was given command to lead the people through the portal, back to the land of Aishelon. The “Right Hand” party (Grenton, Vitrem, Reneslar, Tarect) turned westward seeking an overland route through the caverns of the Ice Träulls (through the ancient Duergun fortress of Iskylgang) — while at the same time being pursued by a fierce Uruk warrior/etheric named Dröakka, who attacked on dragon-back. In seeking access to the guarded tunnels below the Great Mountains, both Sutton and Braggon were killed by the Ice Träulls. Sutton’s powerful lightning staff fell into the hands of Dröakka, who later made effective use of it by slaying Tarect and the Spriggan. While in the tunnels, Vitrem discovered the Great Sword Attresa, which had been lost by Lord Kulerva centuries earlier.   Emerging on the opposite side of the mountains, Vitrem was drawn by an ethereal call from Pana'rietha, who was being held prisoner in the Shadowood by its ruler, the Huntmaster. The Lurvite people of this region were held in the sway of a mass charm, by which the Huntmaster commanded ultimate loyalty in his war with neighboring Fae. While in the Shadowood, Reneslar fell under the enchantment of the Huntmaster. Though Vitrem and Grenton were able to rescue Pana, it was too late for their long-time comrade. Reneslar betrayed the party under the influence of the High One and committed suicide with his own sword.   OUTSIDE GAME-TIME: At the conclusion of this adventure, the “Left Hand” party met up with the “Right Hand.” Damiar Guthane passed the sword Sanctica to his half-brother Grenton, and Grenton passed the Circle Pendant to Pana. Note: The final ending of this expedition was revealed in narrative form, as described in Grenton’s journal, discovered hundreds of years later by the Crucible Party (Campaign 17). The journal recorded the events leading up to the Extinguishing and The Age of Darkness.   MEMORABLE MOMENTS: Many memorable scenes in this adventure included the assault on the Träullish Ice Fortress, the finding of Attresa, and the introduction of the Lurvite Shadowood area. It is the game in which Vitrem was asked to word a careful wish on behalf of the party; instead he leaped up and shouted: “Show me my destiny!” The campaign also marked the passing of several long-time characters who had been a part of the game since GR 1: The Great Quest.
