Bricktop

Though a great deal of buying and selling goes on in the Old Quarter and the North End, real business takes place in Bricktop. It is here that the merchant caravans of the Bloodstone Lands are bought and sold before they ever set out from their homelands, the price of mead is set throughout the region, and fortunes that would make kings weep are made and lost every day.   A more or less affluent area of town, Bricktop is the Merchant District. It is named for Bricktop Road, a major thoroughfare. The slang term “bricktop” indicates anything that is of good quality. Bricktop is made of yellowish, fired brick and runs around the perimeter of Palace Hill. The color of the brick accounts for statements in the slums that the streets in Heliogabalus are paved with gold. This area is characterized by small- to medium-sized expensive homes; the population is mostly of Damaran descent.   Many merchants, ministerial aides, and other well-paid persons live here. It is also the home of retired adventurers of middling incomes.   Bricktop is known for a dwarven neighborhood (Dwarftown) and a halfling neighborhood (The Burrows), both races are more common in Bricktop than other districts in Heliogabalus.

Government

The Guilds of the Merchants' District take their responsibility of oversight very seriously. Each guild has at least one senior member assigned to the district administration office, and they often have a staff which includes at least one barrister provided by the guild. The Merchant's Guild alone has almost a dozen administrators on retainer to oversee the efficient governance of the district.

Defences

Town/District Guard

Nellisir Avanson (human male) is a fairly laid-back captain who spends his time preparing for a thieves guild incursion to “his” district.   Guard patrols tend to be consistent and spread out, usually two guards patrol together, and the district probably has a dozen patrols out during the day. At night the patrols double, consisting of four men, but Avanson can only field six to nine of these larger patrols.

Industry & Trade

Merchant's Heart is the lifeblood of the city, the main docks of Tradeharbor are located in the district, as well as the Merchants' Guildhall and many craft guilds. The district is always buzzing, and the guilds have paid for everburning torches in lanterns on the main roads of the district, so there's always light.

Geography

Neighborhoods

Bricktop Center. The heart of Bricktop, the Center is the district's government center.   Merchant's Heart. The center of industry in Heliogabalus. Merchant's Heart is home to the Damaran Merchant's League, the most powerful guild in the kingdom. Everything can be bought or sold in Merchant's Heart, if you have the coin.   Tradeharbor. One of the neighborhoods on Lake Mogodor, Tradeharbor hosts the majority of the guild docks. This neighborhood is always busy with porters, sailors, and teamsters. Most ships are guild-owned, independently-owned ships tend to use docks outside of Tradeharbor.   Lakeview. Lakeview is more pleasant than Tradeharbor. The Grand Theater is located in Lakeview, and it is considered one of the most upscale neighborhoods to be in outside the Hill. It boasts many inns, taverns and restaurants.   The Burrows. The hin neighborhood of Heliogabalus, the Burrows doesn't really look like the rest of the city. Instead of cobbles and stone, much of the Burrows is grass and garden. Traditional hin burrows replace some of the houses, though many of the locals still have wood or stone homes. In some cases, the homes are deceptive, with a large burrow hollowed out below a small single story home.   Dwarftown. The dwarven neighborhood of Heliogabalus, Dwarftow is nearly all stone. The din of hammers striking steel or stone is ever-present in Dwarftown.
