Thessian Empire
The Thessian Empire was the most powerful and expansive empire of the Ancient Era. At its height, it controlled nearly all of Tara, and as such left a lasting and overarching cultural significance to the universe for millenia to come.
The first center of the Thessian Empire's power was the city of Ghazalbad, which had been founded in 2802 and grew to become one of the largest cities of the ancient world.
The Thessian Empire is thought to have officially begun in 3416, but its culture had been developing for centuries before this - resultingly, the exact dates of the beginning of the empire are still somewhat disputed by historians.
Thessian culture originated in southern Ghazia and in the northern Thes'set Desert.
The Thessians began to expand their borders and control of territories through conquest in 3416, marking the beginning of an era and a new world power. Their first expanded territory reached into the northern Thes'set Desert and into western Durvara, which they fully conquered in 3452.
The empire continued to make gradual but steady territorial gains over the next century, during which time Thessian culture saw major leaps and population growth.
By this time, the empire had experienced numerous rebellions, expansions, revolts, victories, and defeats. The Thessians were particularly good at learning from their mistakes, and at observing and learning from the cultures that they brought into the empire. Adept strategists, the rulers and leading minds of Thessia developed systems and procedures on how to go about military campaigns, conquests, colonization, and the control and management of a large empire. These efforts would lay a foundation for the empire to reach far greater heights of power.
By 3490, the Thessian Empire controlled all of Duravara, most of the northern Thes'set Desert
including what is now Lennar, and some territory in northwestern Seviah and northwestern Sevsisetti (present-day Rayleigh).
The first ruler to be made Emperor of Thessia was Gallatan Taur, in 3492.
Thessia then set its sights on conquering Seviah - particularly its sacred and wealthy mountain-top city Naitoumi-Sevah. The conquest oficially began in 3494. Although borders farther into Seviah were expanded, Naitoumi-Sevah itself proved to be an unyielding stronghold, and efforts to conquer it resulted in drawn-out sieges and war that lasted for the rest of Gallatan Taur's lifetime.
The empire suffered a major setback in 3519, following a devastating defeat in battle in Larislouz.
A major rebellion had arisen there, and after military commanders were unsuccessful in quelling revolts, the Emperor himself arrived with reinforcements of elite troops. This army had previously been occupying and carrying out siege warfare on Naitoumi-Sevah; their withdrawal marked the first time in 23 years that the area was not occupied with a major Thessian prescence.
Once the final battle of the rebellion began, it quickly became clear that Larislouz had concealed the extent of their armies, and intentionally lured the Emperor into battle. Their forces included Vampires and Vashorn, which the Thessians did not have experience fighting.
In a situation that was already dire, the empire forces were completely overwhelmed when a dragon was brought onto the battlefield, annihilating the Thessian armies. This was one of the first recorded mentions of the red dragon Czyrdth the Unfated.
Emperor Gallatan Taur died of wounds sustained in battle the following day.
This battle became known as The Battle of the Unfated.
Following this, the army in Larislouz was joined by forces from Seviah, and marched northwest to lay siege on the Thessian capital of Ghazalbad. This was successful, resulting in The Sacking of Ghazalbad and thousands of deaths. Ghazalbad was occupied by enemy forces for 10 months.
The capital was re-taken by the empire in 3520, and Tavdo Randa'aras was chosen and crowned as the 2nd Emperor of the Thessian Empire.
The following decades were a period of recovery and measured actions for the Thessians, who withdrew forces from many controlled territories, focused on re-strengthening their forces, and only made small territorial gains. They maintained control of Durvara and the northern Thes'set Desert.
