Svalich Woods

"I have been sent to you to deliver this message. If you be creatures of honor, you will come to my master's aid at first light. It is not advisable to travel the Svalich Woods at night!" He pulls from his tunic a sealed letter, addressed to all of you in beautiful flowing script. He drops the letter on the table. "Take the west road from here some five hours march down through the Svalich Woods. There you will find my master in Barovia."

The Svalich Woods is the title ascribed to the many forests cluttering the land of the Shadowed Vale.

Lay of the Land

The evergreen trees of the Svalich Woods cover the entire valley. The woods lie south of the Rubygold Mountains. Between Mount Baratok and Mount Ghakis stands Lake Zarovich, which is fed by streams of ice-cold water pouring down the face of Mount Baratok, near the Ruby Pass. On the south side of the lake rests the remnants of the town of Vallaki, enclosed by a palisade. West of the two mountains, atop a hill, stands Krezk, and the ruined Abbey of Saint Markovia. Between Vallaki and Krezk lies Argynvostholt. East of the mountains lies the village of Barovia, shrouded in mist and bereft of walls and defences. The dark silhouette of Castle Ravenloft looks down on this village from its perch atop a 1,000-foot-high column of rock known as the Pillarstone of Ravenloft.
