The Quiet Lake
General Summary
The quiet lake began with a group of travelers sitting in a small inn in the village of Pondside. They each ordered their drinks. Sterling (Human Fighter), TLC (Gnome Fighter), and Frilby (Wood Elf Rogue) ordered an ale, while Oleg (Goliath Barbarian) ordered ale from the largest skull available and Des'marais (half elf bard) ordered water. Oleg's ale was given in a dirty plant pot as it was all the innkeeper had.
Sitting in the inn's corner was Fendar Laufey, who after a game of cups gave Des'marais a gold ring with blue details. He was sad to lose this ring as he revealed it was all he had. He had moved to Pondside to retire from the city guard in Manlon and bought a small cottage by the lake, but after a few weeks he decided he wasn't happy there and gave the house to a nice old lady and he moved in to the inn.
After this conversation, the group heard screaming coming from outside the inn. Sterling ran out to investigate and found 3 crocodiles moving in to attack a small gnome girl. He loosed two quick arrows to take down the crocodile closest to the girl, and the rest of the adventurers came out to help. Oleg and Frilby quickly dispatched another with a javelin and an arrow, but the third needed hits from Frilby, TLC and a long shot from Sterling to go down after a missed bite at Oleg.
These events quite shook the little girl, Aurelio Corszen, so Des'marais cheered her up with some magic tricks and Oleg tried to stand out of view because of his colossal form. With the crocodiles taken care of, the group took to looking at their remains to see what they could make of the situation, Sterling determined the crocodile was most likely starving and skinny while Des'marais believed he was looking at a perfectly healthy alligator. They took the little girl home to ensure she was safe.
At Aurelio's home, they briefly chatted with her mother and learned that the crocodile attacks were new in the last few weeks. The village had never had problems before. TLC briefly tried to flirt with the girl's mother, but Oleg was very imposing on the situation. Taking the mother's advice, the group went to talk to the village elder.
The village elder, Herben Yradow, was sitting in the town hall, repeatedly counting his minuscule income from the tourism industry. He said that the attacking crocodiles has never been a problem before, but it should be the responsibility of the Order of the Moon to resolve. The order sends its initiates to the tiny village to train when they are close to reaching the rank of Representative and act as a police force.
The group followed Herben to the order of the moon chapterhouse and loudly knocked after Hesturiel Zumbrota. The old Gith opened the door and sounded apathetic to the issues in the village as, on the whole, crocodile attacks aren't too uncommon. They explained it was uncommon for Pondside, so he called in Kartuhm Samedan from his run to go investigate. The young half orc ran in to town to find a clue. The adventurers investigated the lakeside house that used to be owned by Fendar. They returned to the inn to talk to the Tiefling, and he agreed to go with them to the lake.
At the lake they approached the beautiful, small cottage. Flowers surrounded it and had a quaint vegetable patch at the back. The view across the lake was glorious. They struck up a conversation with the old woman, who refused to step outside of her home, and she reenforced Fendar had given her the home. When he expressed that he no longer felt unhappy with this place, she convinced him he was unhappy. Des'marais found this suspicious and commanded the old lady to step out of the house. Oleg took this as a chance to run in behind her and get a good look. He hit his head on the way in and they only prevented the old lady from interceding by casting hideous laughter. AS the old lady was cackling on the floor, Oleg ate an apple in the house which did not sit well in his stomach and Frilby noticed some large ripples in the lake. When she righted herself, she knew that she had been under the effect of a spell and lunged for one of the aventurers, revealing herself to be a green hag.
With the fight breaking out, the disurbance in the water grew closer and a large Merrow emerged to fight alongside the hag. Over the course of this battle, Oleg, TLC and Fendar took to hacking at the hag, while Stirling and Frilby fought the Merrow, Des'marais provided support and healing to both groups. The fighters who were engaged with the Hag did a good job of resisting her magics and dealt considerable damage with their swords and great axe. Sterling volley fired over the fight with the hag, dealing consistent hits against the Merrow. Using its harpoon the Merrow skewered Frilby, rendering him unconscious, after he was revived by Des'merais the the Merrow moved in with a finishing blow but the elf rolled away to dogde the harpoon, but wasn't so lucky with the bite. Oleg finally decapitated the hag and TLC ran across to run through the Merrow to end the battle.
With the hag dead, the area was revealed to have been corrupted, the vegetables we rotten and the flowers had died. Oleg took a few more rotten apples for the journey and the group left Fendar to put his home back together. The crocodiles were returning to the lake, showing that the Merrow had scared them off. On their return walk back to the village they encountered Kartuhm running the other way as he believed the issue to be at the lake. They told him hat had happened and he replied that Fendar should take better care of his home.
At the village, Hestur showed himself to be less apathetic, but he had to put on a show to get the appropriate reaction from Kartuhm. He handed the group some order of the moon coppers and thanked them for their help.
