The Raikirian Desert

The Raikirian Desert is a vast range within the New Minam  Empire. The region falls within the kingdoms of Teraph, Limi-Xou and Kingdom of the Sun. Most of the Desert is fairly inhospitable, the sand dunes of the Kingdom of the Sun and the stoney outcrops of the Teraph and the scrubland and great river in Limi-Xou. Crossing the desert like a wriggling serpent is the chain of trees and series of oasis known as the Emerald Ribbon. This was the intentional work of the Wardens of the Leaf and Sand. It seeks to make the desert greener and more hospitable. It runs from Ventri-Oas in the West to Orala-Was in the high desert then on to Juir in the east. Build ages ago within the Ribbon is the elevated stone causeway along which runs the Oasis Courser, a fast craft that connects the ribbon with fast trade and access.   As the region was rural and less populated to begin with, the effects of the Plague and Engine Failure affected the region less than many others. So the prejudices and wars were less felt here.   Within the desert live many fantastic creatures, the Orac, Sand Liot and Spirit Jackals. The Orac are herd animals that roam the scrublands and outcrops. The Sand Liot are psychic worms that build complex underground nests within the sand, transforming the sand into delicate stone. While the spirit jackals are know to glow strange patterns in their fur under the moonlight.   Travel is most often done in the early morning, late evening or night as the sun is relentless with only a few scant inches of rain every year. Oasis and caches of water are closely guarded and generally under the control of the locals if any. Many of these caches are in artificial reservoirs under ground or in stone buildings that protect against the sun. Befouling a cache of water is considered a great crime as it can lead to the death of a community reliant on it. As such fighting, shedding blood, or allowing a sick or diseased person enter a cache is taboo.
