Anoomenon The Iron Sentinel

The Iron Sentinel is a great townhouse in a suburb of the city of Anoomenon once known as Merchants' View, and now within the Thister-Arc Quarter. It stands half way down Ivy Street, a road that runs roughly west to east, parallel to Merchants' Avenue, hugging a contour line where the slope south to the ocean becomes a little steeper than the relatively gentle gradient to the north.

Architecture

The name of the Iron Sentinel is derived from the top section of the watchtower, which contains eight floor to ceiling panes of thickened optically pure glass, secured in a rib of iron struts. The tower is the most obvious and unique feature of the building but elsewhere, wood, brick and stone cladding are used more frequently, with some more limited use of decorative ironwork. Access to the tower was possible from within the house and directly via a flight of metal steps at the back of the building.   Within the body of the house, there was a grand dining room with a large kitchen attached, a sumptuous living room, a study with a small library annex, a games room and two storage spaces. Two staircases led to the upper floors where there were four bedrooms and three bathrooms, a map room and a nursery.

History

The Iron Sentinel was built in 1656 AF during the age of the Succession Empires, at a time when the fashionable suburb of Merchants' View was expanding rapidly to the north of Old Port. It was designed by Admiral Midah Plurath, the eldest son of a rich aristocratic lineage and an important commander in the city navy, who built it as an eccentric combination of a family home and a military watchtower. With the twin factors of a favourable geographic location and a high gable tower which dominated the local skyline, it commanded excellent views over the Perque Bay, as Midah had desired.   The Iron Sentinel remained as the townhouse of the Plurath family for some four hundred years, until it was sold to pay debts during the age of the Trade Wars in 2061 AF.   Thereafter it was continuously occupied by a succession of owners, all the way through to 2949 AF when it was abandoned during that period known as the Emptying of Earth.   Although it is no longer a permanent dwelling place and has fallen into considerable disrepair, thanks to the efforts of the Thister-Arcs, who settled in Merchants' View in 3000 AF, it has been at least partially restored and the tower remains a wonderful location to observe the sweeping views over the bay to the south.
