Cannonfodder Cafe
There are few places more charming in Daring Heights than a small table at Cannonfodder Cafe on a glorious day. Sitting on the rooftop terrace, bordered by low fencing painted white and covered in ivy and other climbing plants, customers can look out over the peaceful, though sad, fields of Daring Cemetery, down the hillside and other houses and buildings that make up lower Graveside and on to the vast stretches of canopy off into the horizon of Feythorn Forest.
This cafe has been a hugely successful endeavour for Ruby Cannonfodder, and she tries not to talk about her first, far less successful venture. The problem with a name like Cannonfodder is that when the cheapest land is nearest the graveyard you really have to tread carefully. She'd had the jokes growing up, though when you live amongst the bulk of your clan in the hills people tend to at least think twice before pissing off a dozen more dwarves than they meant to. Coming to Daring was to be her chance to really make a mark for the family name though, and so she set up an inn and determinedly placed called it Cannonfodders'.
People came to her inn at first - it was a busy town for visitors, after all - and it was a nice enough place. A number of people came for the funerals of their loved ones who had moved to Daring from Faerûn though, and staying at Cannonfodder's across from the graveyard seemed rather tasteless, and a number of people said so. Business was poor as people would come once, but not visit again.
Ultimately, the decision to close doors and reopen a few months later not as a place to stay the night, but to have a light and peaceful bite to eat, turned out to be a far more palatable idea. Cannonfodder Cafe (or Ruby's as it is often known) was an instant hit - the decision to tear out some of the rooms upstairs to make way for this delightful rooftop terrace took great advantage of the view her business' position gave her. It's since been known as one of the best views in the city.
Ruby Cannonfodder still runs things with a smile and a greeting as she did before, but now with more pride behind her eyes as she sees the family name actually taken seriously and successful - an achievement her clan would be proud to see.
