Gratica

Geography

Gratica is dominated by four major terrain types:
  • the flat grasslands of the Gratic Plain in its center;
  • the wooded regions of the Deranti Forest;
  • the rising slopes of the White Guard Mountains in the west; and
  • the tumultuous waters of the Gulf of Grasiun to the north and east.
  • The region is fed by several small rivers and creeks, providing water to support the local people.

    Fauna & Flora

    The plains are inhabited by many species of snakes, moles, and birds, with the occasional wild ox or escaped animal running across the plains. The grasses commonly are long, reaching chest height in some places, with the occasional wildflower or small oak providing some variety.   In the hillier areas of the plain as it approaches the mountains, there are more wild game like Grassdeer and wild cows, commonly being hunted by the elusive Nightstalker or its natural cousins the cougar or the wolf. The long grasses of the plains begin to give way to small bushes and shrubs, as rainfall is a little more common here.   The more mountainous regions contain more birds of prey and the voles and possums that they feed on. There is an obvious lack of vegetation here, mostly giving way to lichens and mosses and the occasional tuft of grass. The real biodiversity of this landscape lies in the deep caves, where bright fungi and mosses paint pictures of great beauty and awe.   The Deranti forest is populated by tall oaks, larches, and other deciduous trees, with mosses and mushrooms providing an undergrowth fed by the shed leaves and needles of the trees above. As far as fauna is concerned, there are many kinds of birds, including owls, as well as grassdeer, badgers, foxes, bears, and the occasional sighting of a Faerie beast.   On the coasts, the cliffs are sheer but colourful, with many seabirds, turtles, and bats nesting inside caves and caverns hundreds of feet above the seashore. There are several kinds of fish and seafood that live in The Bright Sea, as well as seaweed and kelp.

    Natural Resources

    The fields and grasslands of the Gratic Plain are very fertile, producing a wide variety of foodstuffs and grain and providing good pastures for cows, chickens, and dargin. The rivers carve through dirt layers and expose clay for bricks and ceramics. In the hillier and more mountainous regions, mines and quarries collect stone and precious metals. The forests are natural places for the extraction of lumber and game. Coastal areas are full of fish and seafood for fishermen with nets and rods, and occasional salt pans in these areas are good for collecting dried sea salt.
