Personal history
Dante was born as Kairos. His parents, Devotion and Wit, were already devout Seekers of the White Sign when he was born. They met each other in Rhylstone in 980. Dante was born in 982 in Rhylstone. Luna had begun using wther cores in her experiments about a year before Dante was born, and when he learned of a newborn she approached Devotion and Wit and told them that she could ascend him. Devotion and Wit agreed without a second thought, handing Dante over to Luna. They didn’t realize what his “ascension” would entail.
Luna equipped Dante with an ether core before putting him into the manmade rift to the Neverplane in the lab. However unlike previous adult subjects, Dante was unable to be retrieved from the Neverplane. Luna concluded that despite the ether core his body was too small to handle the amount of ether he was exposed to and he etherified and evaporated due to instability. She wrote it off as a death, and told Devotion and Wit that Oasis welcomed him into the Neverplane to excuse why he was gone.
Devotion and Wit were glad that Dante joined Oasis in the Neverplane, but missed him terribly. That’s why in the future Devotion would volunteer as a subject for a future experiment. Unlike Dante, Devotion successfully returned from the Neverplane but Luna incorporated her into the generator, leaving Wit alone.
Luna told Wit that Devotion was also accepted into the Neverplane to excuse her absence. After losing both his wife and son, Wit slipped into a depression. He experienced a crisis of faith and no longer trusted Luna. One night he had gotten drunk and broken into Luna’s room to confront her, but she was not there. Instead he opted to snoop around her office. During his investigation he discovered the report on Dante, learning that Luna used “ascension” as an excuse to subject cultists to experimentation and that the cult believed Dante had died in the Neverplane. He took the report and fled from Rhylstone, never to be seen again.
In reality, Dante did not die in the Neverplane. He entered the Neverplane through the rift in the lab, and accidentally fell out through the Tiaoyin Gate. He could not be retrieved from the Neverplane because he was no longer there. He was found in the Tiaoyin Forest by Sevrah. He was wrapped in a white blanket, but there were no identifying characteristics which would point them towards the cult.
After leaving the cult Wit became obsessed with finding a way to bring Dante and Devotion back. He studied etherology (specializing in etherbeings) because he believed that both Dante and Devotion would have etherified before they died.
This early exposure to the Neverplane is what gave Dante the ability to perform feats impossible for mortals, such as killing Etherbeings or being able to walk through the Neverplane unharmed.
