Uldrak the Tinkerer is a slightly insane spined devil that used to be a celestial empryean. He currently operates a mechanic shop in
Avernus from the inside of his former skull and is known for his collection of antique and exotic parts for
infernal warmachines.
History
Centuries or more in the past, Uldrak was an empyrean that traveled to Avernus to slay
Tiamat for his god. To do so, the giant Uldrak infused an
Orb of Dragonkind into the pommel of his massive sword, believing it wouldl empower the blade enough to end Tiamat for good.
Uldrak was ultimately defeated, and Tiamat cursed Uldrak by polymorphing him into a spined devil. Taking refuge in his former massive skull beside his half-buried sword, Uldrak began trying to find ways to regain his former celestial nature, discovering at some point that he needed a drop of Tiamat's blood to undo the curse. Needing a way to survive in the meantime, Uldrak became a mechanic for infernal warmachines, mostly serving
Avernian warlords. Uldrak's long years as a devil also began driving him insane, and he was known for arguing with himself, even in front of strangers.
In 1497, Uldrak met the
Lost Star Detectives, a group of adventurers hoping to end the
Damnation of Elturel and who were in search of an
astral piston, an antique warmachine part Uldrak had. Seeing hope in these heroes, Uldrak promised to give them an astral piston if they could obtain for him a drop of Tiamat's blood. To do this, Uldrak gave them the Orb of Dragonkind on his sword, believing any powerful servant of Tiamat would trade for it. The Detectives agreed, but later, worrying that the orb would do terrible things in Tiamat's hands, traded it instead to
Burney, an agent of Bahamut, for safekeeping.
As the years wore on, and Uldrak realized the Detectives had either conned him or failed, his fragile mental state worsened, believing that there was no way to save himself.
