Hong Kong
Hong Kong is an island on the eastern Pearl River Delta. With over 7.5 million people living in just 426 square miles, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.
Hong Kong was ceded by China to the British following the First Opium War, who used it as a colony and trading post. Between 1941 and 1945 it was occupied by Japan, after which British control resumed. The Island was eventually returned to Chinese control in 1997, and it has been a special administrative district of China ever since. Chinese rule in Hong Kong is contraversial among Hong Kongers, and there have been many protests in the twenty-first century.
It is one of the world's most important ports and a major financial center. The Hong Kong Dollar is the eighth most used currency in the world, and its citizens have one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, although this is heavily weighted by the high number of bilionnaires living there, and hides severe income inequality.
As well as being a financial center, Hong Kong is notable as a major magical center of Asia. People from a huge variety of cultures pass through the port or make their homes in Hong Kong, which has created an ecclectic magical tradition unique to the Island, based on traditional Chinese magic, but encorporating elements from accross Asia, Europe, and Africa. It is home to one of the Masters of the Mystic Arts's three Sanctum Sanctorums, which is home to many important magical artefacts. The current Sanctum Master is August Wu, who, according to popular myth, has protected the city since the 19th century, though it is likely this is actually an inherited title.
