Masters of the Mystic Arts

The Masters of the Mystic Arts are an order of sorcerers who are committed to protecting Earth from mystical threats.

Structure

The Masters are lead by the Sorceror Supreme, who is chosen by the consensus of all magic users.

Below the Sorceror Supreme sit a number of officers, chosen by a committee of the current officers and Sorceror Supreme. These officers include the Master of Novices, the Kamar-Taj Librarian, the Senechal, and the three Sanctum Masters.

Below these officers are the masters, and finally the novices. Novices are required to live at Kamar-Taj unless granted special dispensation by the Sorceror Supreme, follow a strict regimen of training, and are restricted in the types of magic they may learn, and books they may access.

Masters have no such requirements, and beyond being required to respond to any call for aid issued by Kamar-Taj, they are free to do as they please. It is not unusual for a magic user to graduate to master, and thereafter never return to Kamar-Taj again.

History

The Masters have traditionally claimed to have been founded by Agamotto, the first Sorceror Supreme, however several historians both within and without the organization dispute this.

The current Sorceror Supreme, Wong, wrote a monograph on the history of the organization while serving as the Kamar-Taj Librarian, in which he suggested that the organization was not formerlized until the thirteenth century CE, though a loose alliance of magic users, from which the Masters were born, had existed for far longer.

He argues that the role of Sorceror Supreme, which had existed for far longer, but became incorporated into the structure of the Masters at some point during the late 12th or early 13th century.

Although widely accepted, his theory is disputed both by those who hold to the traditional view that the Masters were founded by Agamotto himself, and by other historians, who have noted that Wong's primary source is the notoriously unreliable Book of Cagliostro.
