Stonehenge
Stonehenge is a ruined prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England.
It is made up of an outer ring of standing stones, each one around 4m high, connected by horizontal lintel stones. Within it is a smaller but similarly constructed ring of stones. The outer ring are local sarcen, while the inner ring are bluestone, believed to have been quaried in south-west Wales. Inside the inner ring of bluestone, there are three additional sarcen trilithons (pairs of standing stones connected by a lintel), and the whole structure is surrounded by a circular earth bank, believed to have been created in around 3,200 BC, while the bluestones are believed to have been errected in around 2,400 BC.
It is orientated so that the sunrise on the summer solstice shines through the stones. An avenue leading up to the stones is marked by the heel stone, a lone standing stone, positioned so the the solstice sun rises directly behind it.
According to myth, it was built by Merlin himself. Although Merlin's historicity is disputed even among magic users, Stonehenge is one of the only locations to provide direct access to the Nexus of All Realities (rather than to the Starlight Citadel, or locations elsewhere in Otherworld). The doorway can be opened by spilling the blood of the Heir of Merlin on the central trilithon.
In addition to its use as a doorway to the Nexus, the site is believe to have been a religious site for neolithic and bronze age britons. Human remains have been found in the surrounding earthworks, suggesting it was used for burials.
It is legally protected as an ancient monument, and has been since 1882 when such protections were first introduced. It is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Access to the site is heavily restricted, but Neo-Pagans, Neo-Druids, and other groups who consider the site sacred are permitted to enter the stones during the summer solstice in order to worship.
