London
London is the capital and largest city of the United Kingdom. It has been a major settlement for two millennia, and was originally founded by the Romans. The City of London, London's ancient core, retains boundaries that closely follow its medieval limits. The adjacent City of Westminster has for centuries been the location of much of the national government.
London has a diverse range of people and cultures, and more than 300 languages are spoken. London accounts for 13.4% of the U.K. population. The London metropolitan area is the third-most populous in Europe, with 14,040,163 inhabitants in 2016.
London is one of the largest financial centres in the world. London's universities form the largest concentration of higher education institutes in Europe. London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; Kew Gardens; the area comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret's Church; and Greenwich, where the Royal Observatory defines the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) and Greenwich Mean Time. Other landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, the British Museum and Trafalgar Square. The London Underground is the oldest rapid transit system in the world.
