Heroes of Ferelden

The Heroes of Ferelden is a title bestowed upon a small group of individuals who, when Ferelden was close to imploding in on itself in civil war , managed to drag the nation back from the brink of imminent and violent collapse. Their tale took place during the Ferelden Civil War, a period of brutal in-fighting amongst the Ferelden people where friends and families were forced to draw their blade against one another in barbaric warfare. All the while, Jrid were clawing their way up through the Uncharted Lands and attacking Ferelden's south, resulting in massive death tolls.   While many people crumbled under the pressure of such intense and trying times, the Heroes of Ferelden took it upon themselves to journey throughout the nation to bring an end to the war, to unify the Alamarri, and to lead one of Thedas' strongest unified people in a fight for their lives against the Jrid.   The actions of these Heroes drastically shaped the future history for Ferelden, the Alamarri and Avvar people, and relations of many different groups scattered all across Thedas. Their journey has been memorialized in the oral tales told by every other Ferelden who either bore witness to the Heroes' triumphs, or felt the ramifications of their actions. The exact history is unknown, and it will likely stay that way forever, but many from these lands cherish these memories as a way to remember a simple idea: the night is long, but the dawn will come.

Identities

The identities of the Heroes are not well known; but each of them are remembered in their small corners across Thedas for what they have done. The most well-known member is Gregory Flume, who became Ferelden's king towards the end of the Heroes' tale.   The Heroes who have been remembered have been given the following nicknames, in alphabetic order:

The Tale

"While many dispute whether the attack the Jrid led upon the Ferelden nation was some act of calculated aggression or the ravagings of mindless monstrosities from the Deep Roads, it is agreed that the tale of the Heroes' began because of these Jrid. In the massive Battle of Dur Themriel, the Wardens holed up in an old Tevinter fortress deep in the Korcari Wilds. It was there that they attempted to hold off the Jrid that were storming in from the south. The organization put everything on the line, and it ended up costing them everything when they were defeated and everyone in their organization was killed by Jrid at the battle. As we learned many months later, this was only mostly true. A fresh recruit into his father's organization, Gregory Flume managed to escape and was the only Warden left alive.   With blood pouring from his wounds, he ran as fast he could without stopping for a half dozen days until he reached the village of Rootstart. There, he mustered together his closest allies. Together, they began a journey that would take them deep into the nation's past as they unearthed old grudges and deadly secrets that threatened both them and the entire kingdom."

The tale of the Heroes is one of both triumph and despair, gaining and losing. Their actions were numerous, but some of the most notable actions were, in chronological order:
  • Liberating Redcliffe from legions of undead created by a blood-mage who held the Arl of Redcliffe's wife and son hostage.
  • Having the Avvar and the Golem overcome trials of faith that eventually led the two of them to the location where Andraste's sacred ashes had been hidden away.
  • Leading naval sieges that broke out in Lake Calenhad during the Civil War, resulting in the Heroes' complete dominance of the region especially around Redcliffe.
  • Unifying all the tribes of Dalish who lived in the Brecilian Forest and convincing them to fight under the banner of the Heroes.
  • Foiling a Qunari plot to raze Denerim to the ground. While the ox-men were slaughtering innocents in the streets, the Phalanx challenged their leader to a duel and bested him, forcing the remaining ox-men to flee or die.
  • Forcing a duel which signified the diplomatic re-unification of the country during some of the nation's most trying and divided times.
  • Slaying an evil witch of the Korcari Wilds, who used her sickening magic to impersonate the form of a high dragon
  • Slaying the leader of the Jrid forces deep in the Uncharted Lands to the far south of Ferelden, resulting in Jrid forces collapsing.
