Troll's Head Inn

“The Troll’s Head” is the largest inn in the city. It is owned and run by Braden Springfield and his family. It is a popular establishment with the locals, offering good food, good drink and good company at a very reasonable price. There are rooms for let, a stable and a bath. The most obvious point of interest here is the actual troll skull that is mounted on the wall above the main hall’s mantle. It is several times as large as a typical human skull and shows the killing blow that cracked the skull very plainly. Locals have named the skull “Chuckles” since the skull appears to be perpetually grinning.

Purpose / Function

The largest inn in the city of Rolar.

Denizens

Besides the four Springfield family members and Albee, there are 5 maids, two cooks, and two stable hands that do many odd jobs around the Inn.  All but the cooks have quarters on the third floor of the inn and their meals are (of course) part of their salary.

Valuables

Both Braden and Albee keep a sizable amount of gold on the property.  Braden does a brisk business in beer, cider and stout and finds the best prices are had with gold on the barrel.  Thus, Braden keeps around 5,000 guilders in his vault at any given time.     In Albee's case, he simply doesn't have anything to spend his money on.  All he needs or wants is provided through the inn, so he simply stores his gold and silver in jars hidden under the floor in his rooms.  Albee's jars now contain just over 35,000 guilders worth of gold, silver and brass coins.

Architecture

A large three-story timber framed structure with a stable, stone kitchen and a bathhouse behind it.

Defenses

Like most buildings in Cobal, there are no large windows on the first floor. Instead there are narrow barred openings only 10" wide that are fitted with 2" oak shutters. The floors above have wider windows, but still only 18" wide.  All the doors are solid oak and can be double barred.

History

The Inn is famous for its storied decor, as well as its excellent fare. Braden's father, Brad, was fighting a horde invasion from the west when he saw a very large troll about to kill and consume a dwarf. He took up his heavy axe and killed the beast with a staggering blow to the head, but not before he was seriously injured by the troll's heavy mace. The dwarf, a Hardhelm named Albee Goodsmith, swore to defend Brad Springfield and his family for as long as he lived. Brad recovered from his wounds, had the skull of the great troll cleaned and mounted above the mantle in his inn. Local patrons have named the skull "Chuckles" because of its perpetual grin.
