Drathunae

"My time has come to an end. I leave the rest to you all, go play."
— Father of the Abyss, founder of Il'Drathune
Drathunae were the first species to form settlements in The Underlake. Highly intelligent and capable of using dredging tools capable of breaking bedrock, the drathunae established the cities of Il'Drathune and Il'Arbor. When The Cometfall Theocracy began settling upon the lakeshores, it was the Drathunae who made first contact and proposed a trade agreement. In recent years Drathunae birth rates have plummeted and there are few Drathunae remaining. The majority of the Il'Bisal, or the united peoples of the Underlake, consist of predominantly of other species, though the Drathunae hold a revered status amongst them. As they are known to be pragmatic, long lived, and slow to act, one will find it difficult to rush a Drathunae.   Though deaf and almost entirely blind other than light sensors, Drathunae are able to communicate complex ideas using bioluminescence. They also have a strong sense of 3D spatial awareness, able to utilize a form of blindsight to navigate their surroundings. Lady of the Lake has developed an artifact known as the Jellylight Codex, or a tool that translates the flashes of light of Dratharr (the language of drathunae) to several of the most spoken tongues. In order to communicate with Drathunae directly, one must be able to modulate and create a sequence of light flashes, either through magic or biologically. The Lady of the Lake utilizes a translator fire genasi, Skald in order to communicate with other species.   Drathunae live over 1000 years, though reproduce and mature slowly. Before birth, young are encased in eggs for a few hundred years until conditions are deemed suitable for hatching, though experts (including surviving drathunae) are unsure of the specifics of hatching occurrences. They reach maturation in 200 years, though their physiology allows them to continue growing to larger sizes as they age. Drathunae are not sexually dimorphic, however they denote gender via use of descriptive names and pronouns. Once they approach about 800 years of age, drathunae often become leaders in their communities and begin to display features unique to an individual. Older drathunae are considered to be extremely powerful both physically and magically, though have rarely been seen in combat. Eggs are laid and fertilized near the end of their natural lifespan at approximately 1200 years, after which a Drathunae enters a meditative-like sleep resulting in death.
