Harlequin

Harlequin Yulander , Master bard (a.k.a. Master of the game, The Joker)

Though it is not known whether Harlequin is a single person or more of a title passed from one person to another, or even if they exist, legend states Harlequin appeared during the reign of Lazuria and was rumored to even have been the bard that killed her. The Harlequin in reality is a Half-Orc, Half Snakeman who became an undying.

Legends and Rumors

Bardic game master

The Harlequin is said to be the master of all bards and The Game itself. Said to be based out of the Joker's inn, they assign bards to the paying lords and ladies. They also are said to assign cards that represent various players. The massive countrywide informant network also is supposed to answer to him rather than the bards they serve. Though if you ask either group about the Harlequin, they'll claim to know nothing.   The Harlequin is represented by the Joker in the games deck, as most card games have you remove the Joker, it's fitting that the game master that doesn't get involved in playing has the same card.

Historical legends

Listed below are the historical events that are said to have had direct involvement with the Harlequin.   151 Divine - A joker was found next to the assassin's dagger that killed Queen Lazuria, this is the first time cards were linked to the game.   858 Divine - Fylkir Yorik Hammerhead receives a letter to the King of Spades, from the Joker.   230 Blood - A masked figure that no one knows is at the red Conclave slips out seconds before the attack.

The Truth

Life

Born Yulander in a small village on the edge of the mire of lost souls, the real Harlequin spent her childhood and teens on her family farm. At eighteen the village was attacked by slavers, gathering souls to sell in the few markets that still trade in flesh. during the passage, however, a Lacertillian Serpent Class intercepted the vessel as it made its way east. Though a few slaves died in the attack most were freed and once back on Laceritilla were allowed to go on their way. Yulander found work as a housemaid to a Rivellian Noble. From here she learned politics and a little magic.   The master of the house had goals of glory however and so brought a large group of newer servants to be sacrificed to his lord, the ritual didn't work on Yulander though, due to her Sperpantine heritage. Instead of being enthralled by the entity she made a deal with it, her life for the power to get vengeance. The final act of her living life was to murder every member of the household before fleeing to the dark parts of the city.

Royal freinds

In 125 Devine, five years after the deal, Yulander met a young princess in trouble with some bandits. This was Princess Lazuria who would thank her rescuer, even hiring her to keep an eye on her family. Yulander introduced herself as Harlequin, wanting to distance herself from the pawn she used to be. Harlequin kept an eye on the princess' family, even killing the first few more forward Suitors of Lazuria.   Realizing the need for more information, the Harlequin started building an informant network, finding entertainers as the best spies, the Rivellian bards were quickly born. This led to both the Princess and Harlequin attending the treaty at Lacertillia, with Harlequin sticking to the Shadows.

The Game

Harlequin stayed in Rivell in the following years, building her network and even hiring out bards to nobles to use in their own machinations, even placing her base of operations under the palace. . this led to a code of conduct being agreed upon by the nobles, though Harlequin found out, she didn't care. She also started using a deck of cards to represent the various player, herself being a Joker and teaching her first jack of hearts, Geneviève, in 145 Devine.   When Lazuria came back she encouraged the game to be played and even took credit for its creation. When she was killed Harlequin was blamed, though no one knew who she was by this point.

Into myth

Over the next few centuries, she disappeared, with a few ventures outside of her base. This included helping with the killing of several problematic targets and helping in the missing girls incident of the Dread Forest in 289 Devine. This led to rumors of a shadowy figurehead pulling the strings of Rivell, This suited Harlequin just fine as it kept her bards safer than they normally would be.   A confrontation in 131 Blood between herself and Geneviève seeming led to the latter's death, also showing up at the Conclave of Blood. She would then disappear for several ages, till three children were presented to her, Stephan, Jackle, and Jasmine, Who she raised to be master bards.
