Captain Morthos C. Creed

The Rebel Reaver of The Sea of Sabres

Captain Morthos Calugar Creed (a.k.a. Creed / Malchus Calugar Maccal)

Morthos Creed is a notorious and up-and-coming tiefling pirate, and the irreverent trickster of the Sea of Sabres. A captain of equally dubious morality and allegiances, a master of self-promotion and self-interest, Morthos fought a constant battle with tyraniclal figures of authoroty, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. While the rebelious, outlaw captain often shows great skill in seamanship, swordplay and disguise, his feats are no more exaggerated than those of Zragar Baltoghlu Maccal or John Williams. Creed's first love was the sea, his second, his beloved ship the Red Diamond's Revenge.

Personal history

Early Life

Mothos was first raised by his poor single mother, Matari Creed, and barely knew his father, Xander.   It is unknown how much time Morthos spent with his father because Commodore Xander Pythoon led the ships of the Nymphiard Navy in patrolling the waters of the Crimson Gulf. However, one day the authorities discovered that Commodore's wealth came from gold and silver given to him by pirates, who bribed him in order to let them sail with impunity. This attitude horrified the young Morthos, as his grandfather was killed by Concorde Guardsmen some time earlier.   The corrupt commodore was arrested for treason and his wife, young Morthos's mother, was also taken away and dragged to a workhouse. In the eyes of the Nymphiard law, the wife of a traitor also had to pay for her husband's sins.   Morthos's mother died shielding him from a storm while at sea, circa 16 PC and subsequently his father was released from prison a year later. When his drunken, disgraced father entered their house, prepared to beat the child, the young Morthos greeted him with a knife, mercilessly killing him. Knowing that corruption and abuse of power were the source of all the misfortunes that had destroyed his family, the young Nymphiard made a vow to help poor at the expence of the elite.   Tragedy struck again circa in 18 PC when, as a child at the tender age of 9, his entire crew he served under as a powder monkey, aboard a pirate ship were killed in a battle by the JKD Silent Livyatan flagship of the The Duryad Imperial Royal Navy, led by Zragar Baltoghlu Maccal, who found the young Morthos and decided to adopt him as his own child.

Teens

As a lad in his mid teens, Morthos served with his adoptive father and older brother Rhogar in the The Duryad Imperial Royal Navy, eventually becoming an Chief Junior Artillerist at sea loyal to his Kapral and new homeland. A proud and fearsome soldier, he quickly rose through the ranks, earning several high military decorations over the years until he became a capitain in command of the JKD Red Diamond's Revenge, a powerful yet swift Galleon. Once he was given command of the Revenge, he was in a perfect position to discover the untold wonders of the world, and pursue his love for the sea, so he made that his life's mission.   One night, after a heated discussion with Zragar he snuck by candlelight back to his ship and sailed off. Free to pursue his dream, Morthos set out to be the "greatest pirate" in all of Naghron and the sole Sea Reaver Overlord of The Sea of Sabres .   Though his adoptive father ever loyal and zealously devout to the crown and his duty to eliminate all piracy and deserters, had other plans. Not wanting to let a single pirate or deserter escape him, not even hos own son. Zragar ordered his men to sink the Red Diamond's Revenge and slaughter her outlaw crew should the opportunity present itself.

Quotes & Catchphrases
"Alright, lads. I’ll give you Butcher of the Sea's honest opinion. You ask me, "Can this new captain promise you a life of prizes, thrils, and adventure?" Aye! Amongst all the gentlemen-soldiers of fortune sailing the Seas of Sabres, he ranks amongst the most clever. There was a time when I thought myself the deadliest scourge of these seas. (chukles)
But this man... he's like a fearsome dog. Feeds off trouble and turmoil. I seen him clear the decks of both Nymphiard and Fiergish galleons like it were nothing. Fighting like a devil dressed as a man. And he’s the kind of man knows his way around every crack and crevice of these islands. So if it's fortune and adventure you seek, then my boy Captain Morthos Creed’s your man. Only... don't meddle in his private affairs. For there's more mystery in that man than even I dare ask..."

Pirate

You spent your youth under the sway of a dread pirate, a ruthless cutthroat who taught you how to survive in a world of sharks and savages. You've indulged in larceny on the high seas and sent more than one deserving soul to a briny grave. Fear and bloodshed are no strangers to you, and you've garnered a somewhat unsavory reputation in many a port town.

If you decide that your sailing career involved piracy, you can choose the Bad Reputation feature below instead of the Ship's Passage feature.

Darkvision

Thanks to your infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Legacy of Avernus

You know the Thaumaturgy cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Searing Smite spell once as a 2nd-level spell. Once you reach 5th level, you can also cast the Branding Smite spell once as a 3rd-level spell. You must finish a long rest to cast these spells again with this trait. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Hellish Resistance

You have resistance to fire damage.

Hunter's Bane

At 1st level, you have survived the Hunter’s Bane—a dangerous, long-guarded ritual that alters your life’s blood, forever binding you to the darkness and honing your senses against it. You have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track fey, fiends, or undead, as well as on Intelligence checks to recall information about such creatures.

The Hunter’s Bane also empowers your body to control and shape hemocraft magic, using your own blood and life essence to fuel your abilities. Some of your features require your target to make a saving throw to resist the feature’s effects. The saving throw DC is calculated as follows:

Hemocraft save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Hemocraft modifier (your choice between Intelligence and Wisdom)

Blood Maledict

Also at 1st level, you gain the ability to channel—or sometimes sacrifice—a part of your vital essence to curse and manipulate creatures through hemocraft magic. You know one Blood Curse of your choice. You learn one additional blood curse of your choice at 6th, 10th, 14th, and 18th level. Each time you learn a new blood curse, you can also choose one of the blood curses you know and replace it with another blood curse.

Each time you use your Blood Maledict feature, you choose which curse to invoke from the curses you know. While invoking a blood curse, but before it affects the target, you can choose to amplify the curse by taking necrotic damage equal to one roll of your hemocraft die. This damage can’t be reduced in any way. An amplified curse gains an additional effect, noted in the curse’s description. Creatures that do not have blood are immune to blood curses unless you have amplified the curse.

Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again. You can use Blood Maledict twice between rests starting at 6th level, three times starting at 13th level, and four times starting at 17th level.

Fighting Style

At 2nd level, you adopt a style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one of the following options. You can’t take a Fighting Style option more than once, even if you later get to choose again.

  • Dueling

When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon.
