Baénland

The Isle of Baénland is a fiercely independent country located off the coast of Kefrad. Inhabited by clans of proud highlanders, Baénland is no stranger to war and conflict. Fights break out between clans regularly, sometimes resulting into all out wars. However, the quickest way to see the clans of Baénland unite under one cause is to fend off or overthrow any would be conquerors. Baénland is divided into multiple smaller kingdoms each of which is ruled by a king elected by the clan chieftains within their kingdom. The role of the king is typically that of a war leader and rarely has full power of their kingdom. Typically in order to be eligible for election as king you must be able to claim heritage to a previous king or a hero.   It is rare for the kingdoms of Baénland to band together under the leadership of a single king, instead when the country is threatened or the people are need a folk hero will rise. It is behind these folk heroes that the Baénish will band together to defend their homeland. It is because of this that Baénish history and legends revolve around these folk heroes and many of them have attained such a following they are almost worshipped as demigods. Try as they might, conquerors have been unable to break the cycle of heroes. Anytime a hero is slain it seems that within a matter of a couple years, sometimes even months, another rises to take their place until the country has been defended or freed.
