"Oh gods.... It takes like... Bananas and Onions. Ugh...."

Banana Bulbs are the name given to a fleshy, large Fruit of The Moon Izi. It is the fruit of a plant named Kirussen by the local Fire Elves, which roughly translated to "Sulfur Sucker". The plant grows throughout the Jirra Caverns, especially near the surface and cavern entrances.

Once a year, the plant gives off spores and then after a few months it bears around a dozen large fruits, containing all the sulfur it absorbed over the preceding months. The plant is quite important to the ecosystem as it gets rid of excess sulfur in the air and prevents the humid environment from turning too acidic and killing plants.

The taste of the fruit varies. Deep inside the caverns where the sulfurous atmosphere of Izi can't reach it, the fruit is said to be sweet and creamy tasting. Near the surface, the fruit is said to have a much more sharply pungent flavor. The Fruit has a pulpy inside that is soft and chewy, and a more crunchy core which is more or less the seed this fruit protects.

To the people of Vreathe, the fruit tastes like a combination of bananas and onions, and tastes terrible. The Fire Elves and much of the wildlife like eating the fruits that grow closest to the surface as it is said to have the best flavor, which allows the seeds to be dropped off in the deeper parts of the caverns.

Banana Bulbs last up to six months after picking, and up to a decade after freezing, making them excellent for long-term storage, though the longer they are stored, the more sulfur escapes, and the sweeter the flavor, which is not desirable.

The Fruits are about twice the size of a human fist and contain about half of a person's daily water and food needs. This makes them popular when travelling as an Elf would just need to take twice as many banana bulbs as they are traveling days and be well fed through the entire journey.

The fruit is also used in a large number of different recipes from main dishes to desserts. The crunchy center of the fruit is used in different dishes compared to the the fleshy middle parts.

These fruits are also an important trade item. The roving Goblin bands love the taste of the fruits as much as the Elves do. Similar to the high quality salts the Goblins have for trade, banana bulbs are used as currency alongside obsidian coins and gold.
