Free Cities of Forwire

Consisting of a series of city-states and small territorial governships, Forwire is considered to have little central leadership as each city-state largely handle themselves. For each of these city-states, education and the ability to afford such is considered a sign of status as a remnant of the Ni'rral Empire's rule.
These days the city-states rule their own territories with their dealings with the other city-states varying from one territory to the next, with some even considering war against eachother to be justified. The thing they all agree on however is the Forwire defensive pact that protects them against outside invasions, preventing another empire from ruling over them again.

Naming

Having convinced the Empire to let their naming conventions remain under the Empire's rule, the people of Forwire never had a major change in the way their naming structure worked. While some people opted to pick simpler names to fit in with the rest of the empire, others kept using the traditional names of their forefathers, bringing a mixture of names to the nation.
Typical name: Given name | same-gender parent's name | family name

Economy

Though society works based on one's education, the economy still got major divides between the wealthy families and the less fortunate. Often the shops within a given city will be owned or co-owned by one of the richer families, with the workers within consisting of people with less wealth and depending on job, less educated.
The fields surrounding most villages and towns within Forwire tend to be owned by rich families in the regions and is often the source of their wealth.   Beyond this, the economy within a given city-state can vary greatly, from exporting crafted goods to mining and woodcutting and more.

Law and Order

Each city-state generally maintain a city-watch that takes care of legal matters in the cities and surroundings, as well as acting as the city's defense in times of war.
Most crimes are judged in court, fitting with the system implemented under the Empire's rule and most crimes short of the biggest such as treason, are dealt with by imprisonment or fines as the judges rules appropriate to the individual circumstances.

Culture

Despite the sometimes major differences within the individual city-states, Forwire generally considers education to be of the highest importance. Though not all citizens can afford it, those who can tend to do their utmost to learn and move up in the social hierarchies as only the best educated are seen as fit for leadership.   This emphasis on education has found itself leading to a people with values on philosophy. To be educated is to be knowledgeable, and to be that one would have to value arts and philosophy to show it. Or so the saying goes for the people of Forwire. For those seen as being wealthy enough to pursue these hobbies, it is often also perceived as laziness if they don't, creating a divide even within the more educated citizens.   These values are a remnant of those left behind by the Ni'rral Empire, and is one of the more contrasting divides between the more educated parts of the population, and those without as much. Though a lot also comes down to how rich a family is, exceptions exists and as such family wealth is not always a matter to say where one will eventually end up in society, even if it does make out a significant part of it.   For those without the funds for the higher education, they often find themselves with the simplest sponsored learning in the city which more often than not prepares them for what their future jobs will be. An education that is often far from fancy, but has made the society less rigid by giving them the first step and has abolished the old traditions of being forced to work the same as the person's family by giving them a chance to learn a different trade.

Elections

The election of a new leader is always a big occasion to the city, be it the mayor, chancellor or some other public figure dependent on the local traditions. It is at this time that the citizens get to voice their opinions through their votes, though it is rare for anyone but the most highly educated to be considered a viable candidate for the position due to the rigid tests required beforehand to show that a candidate is properly educated.   The candidates typically use their personal wealth to campaign for their elections and make themselves seen by the population. Part of this is due to their attempts to appear charitable even when they otherwise aren't, contrasting those who are already popular among the citizens who, while not needing to try such, often are already charitable individuals.   It is during this time that a given city-state will often begin most of their major construction works and build more on their public infrastructure due to the fierce competition between the candidates.   Throughout the election period, the candidates will occasionally visit the city's plaza to make a speech where they talk of their personal beliefs and thoughts, though rarely is it related to their plans for the city's future. Candidates who do this frequently throughout the period tend to be regarded as prideful and full of themselves by most citizens, and as taking up potential space from other candidates who might wish to speak.

Relationships

Though it changes with how an individual does it, most relationships within Forwire will have one part showing interest to another and court them with displays of arts, skills or education. It is not unusual for most city-states to have parks dedicated to it, where hearing poems from lovers is commonplace.

Territories

Forwire consists primarily of long stretches of open, fertile land intermixed with small forests and hills. Sharing the majority of their borders with Trekallen, the two nations keep their official borders along the Chesberry river and along the lines originally drawn by the Ni'rral Empire, with the old outposts marking the territories alongside the lack of permanent settlements in Trekallen.   The lesser inhabited parts of the north-western mountain borders is primarily considered Troll/ogre territory. Though officially a part of the defensive pact, they are only so due to the few cities that makes out a living there with most people avoiding the area for their own safety.
