The Inquisition
The Inquisition is among one of the most secretive organizations in the world. In 678 King Vandavar Drachenthorne I ordered a secret decree to raise a force of monster slayers, a promising young hero by the name Sid Kaiber is chosen to lead the way. The Inquisition is founded, and group of 100 men and women of strange and unique powers and tragic lives began training, guided by Sid. They then went about to create four sanctuaries; one in Pav Ature, Standholme, The Weald, No Mans Land and one in Drachenthorne By 680, when Syd Kaiber was 20, the Inquisition began to deliver terror throughout the land, monsters come to be afraid of their swift action and judgement.
In 689 during the reign of King Drachenthrone II, a plague ran rampant through the cities and countryside. The King and counts did nearly nothing as they sat in their ivory towers. The Inquisition chose to act in a bold move. The entire Inquisition assaulted the king’s palace in Drachenthorne, slaughtering anyone in their way. Sid Kaiber ran his rapier through the young king’s throat. The inquisition fled with almost no trace, taking the crown with them. The Counts, enraged, reacted, and hunted down the Inquisition, destroying the Inquisitions bases, only one was left, and remained secret. The crown was lost in the attacks, and until 1632, it was lost.
Since then, the Inquisition has faded into hushed whispers and rumors but still actively hunt the creatures of Vedania.
Inquisitors are selected in an unorthodox manner. There is no way to approach the Inquisition to be trained into powerful monster hunting machines. A candidate is chosen from tragedy. The candidate must have been personally wronged and survived an encounter with a vile monster. Whether they have lost a family member, been cursed by a creature, or in rare cases, kill the creature. They are then approached secretly, and given the means and equipment to seek revenge for the creatures transgressions. If they successfully kill their quarry, they will be contacted again. This time they must hunt down the secret lair of the Inquisition. If it’s found in a decent manner of time they can be admitted and begin training.
In 1632, the Inquisition encountered a dark and terrible foe they themselves codenamed The Spirit Crusher. Under orders of the Grand Master, Inquisitors were dispatched to gather intel on the beast. Unfortunately many Inquisitors met a foul fate and were slain by the creature. Including the Grand Master. It was then that the investigating group were stolen away into The Far Realm deep inside The Spirit Crushers mind. They faced strange and horrid tests, such as playing the Ugly Organ and finding their way through dark chasms. All of those that entered besides Brom Dante Lavey were slain. Leaving him broken and thrown into a position he had no understanding of. Grand Master of the Inquisition.
During Brom Dante Laveys tenure as Grand Master, the Inquisition changed beyond its founding parameters. Ships were bought by the organization, new inventions and alliances were made. All was well until 1658, when an old foe of the Inquisition reappeared. Amon the Betrayer, a devil of great power and guile had stolen The Desert Wind from Grand Sheik Niana Springpaw. Who petitioned for the Inquisition to help her recover the ancient scimitar.
Brom Dante Lavey knew he would need aid in this endever. Seeking out the help of the wizard lords of Arcanix, together they build a magical machine. The machine was to tear those from the grip of death back into life. With its completion, Brom used the machine and stepping from the portals gateway appeared Sir Tobias Vincious his old friend. For weeks after the machines activation, the two sought out allies and reconnected with Cale Rosenoak, who himself escaped the clutches of death from the thieving goddess Olidamarra. Rinsewind, exiled mage of the Freebridge wizarding college. Logan Woodthrush, master ranger and former enforcing for Count Dorias Fang. Together they hunted for Amon the Betrayer to defeat him and take back The Desert Wind.
Journey led them far and wide, and deep into the bowels of hell itself. Where unknowingly they spent three long years captured by the devils. Eventually they escaped and a cataclysmic battle occurred and Amon the Betrayer was slain. Yet, The Desert Wind was no where to be found. The group returned to the material plane to find out that not only had three years passed, but a letter had been received at the manor. A quippy riddle was inside, stating that an ‘old friend’ had The Desert Wind and if they wanted it they must travel to the ruins of Freebridge and take it.
This was the final battle for many of those warriors, some found shattering madness such as Cale Rosenoak, others found everlasting happiness like Sir Tobias Vincious.
The Inquisitorial records do not state what exactly occurred at this time. Only that the Inquisition was disbanded around September of 1661. Passing into legend.
