Devin sighed and carefully counted out three more drops of yarrow-root extract as she dropped them into the almost full glass flask. Was there as shimmer of red in the otherwise clear liquid? No, just a trick of the light. Maybe the alcohol concentration was to high or maybe her theory was wrong altogether.
She sat back on her chair and ran her fingers through her hair. Shaenrava could bee seen in the garden behind their little hut harvesting nettles and whistling a cheerful tune. It had been her suggestion to try and combine yarrow and the distilled amoeba swarm Devin had found in the smith's well. If it worked, the yarrow-root could potentially be used internally, which would open up many more uses. The only thing she had left to do was to neutralize the acid.
Devin flicked through her notes and checked her calculations again and decided that it would be worth to spend a few more drops of precious extract on this experiment. She picked upthe yarrow-root vial and the flask with the frustatingly clear liquid and continued her work, one drop at a time. Then she saw it. The last drop turned the liquid red for just one moment before the colour faded like smoke in a breeze. Quickly, she added another drop. The result was the same. Another. This time the colour stayed. Devin stood up to move closer to the natural light of the window. She swirled the liquid around and now it turned a bright red. Devin smiled.
"Grandma, look!", she held the flask closer to the window. Then, like a shadow moving through it, its contents turned a rusty brown and finally black. There was a loud crack and Devin could only stare at glass and black ooze that covered the floor, the wall, the window and the peppermint growing on the windowsill. She was still trying to comprehend what exactly had happened when Shaenrava came running into the room. The fear in her eyes scared Devin more than anything else. Then, thick red blood blinded her and the world turned into darkness.
