Barandin

Modern marissian: Barandin
Old marissian: Íþalún
Faronian: Barandin

Barandin is the provincial capital of Zekalún, the eastern province of the Kingdom of Marissía in southern Adynía, located at the mouth of the river Taþyrin in the southeastern part of the country.
It's one of the oldest cities in Marissía and among the most important ones to the local Marissíans, as Barandin is a major link in the trade-route between them and the Kingdom of Faron to the east and, through it, the city-states of Gysikan and island of Refon beyond. In turn, faronian goods exchange hands as they are transported to Nemirkía via Svarkó Pass north of Marissía.
Centuries ago, some of those wares would end up in Larúnas far to the west, but that route has been abandoned since the region was overrun by Dragons.

Demographics

Aside from native marissíans, a significant number of barandinites are of faronian, southern dardian or -more distantly- larúnean ancestry, due to centuries and even millennia-long contact with those groups.

History

In ages past, the people of Barandin offered human sacrifice to Menan, goddess of the river Taþyrin, in hopes of preventing excessive flooding during springtime. While the goddess is still worshipped by the barandinites, her victims have long since been replaced by eels, though cooked in the same manner and accompanied by only slightly modified hymns and prayers.

Architecture

The city is known for the beauty of its palace, temples and mansions, most of which are built from wood and feature gilded and elaborately carved columns and marble floors in white, pink and black. The white marble comes from the Sjorgús Mountains, while the black and pink ones are brought all the way from the Zóken Mountains in southeastern Adynía.
