Situated on Low Road in the industrious Flintlock district of Bridgeport, Lili's Orphanage serves as a lively home for 20 children between the ages of 5 and 14. Under Lili's nurturing leadership, the young residents participate in diverse activities that foster skill development and contribute to the orphanage's sustainability.
"Our little family may not have much, but we have love and hope. And that's worth more than any treasure." -- Lili

Daily Activities

The children bake cookies and create small crafts from wood, fabric, and strings. They learn valuable skills and earn money for the orphanage by selling these items to people in Bridgeport. A small group of older children works as tour guides. They show visitors around Bridgeport, highlighting important locations. They also deliver urgent messages that cannot wait for the usual Hare-Mail Delivery. The younger children, meanwhile, assist with chores around the orphanage, study basic lessons provided by Lili, and engage in play and creative activities to stimulate their minds.

The peddler Martine is a frequent visitor of the orphanage. She is buying batches of cookies and crafts from the orphanage to resell them on her travels through Bridgeport County. This partnership brings more visibility and support to the orphanage.   The orphanage is also a meeting point for street kids and kids with no siblings who are in need of some friends.
"Coming to the orphanage feels like home. There are so many friends here, and we get to do fun things every day! Lili takes care of us and makes sure we're safe." -- Neighbourhood Child

History

The orphanage has a rich history of community support. It started when Lili transformed a run-down building into a warm, welcoming home. However, tragedy struck when a fire destroyed a part of the building. Gnome Workshop stepped in to help restore and even improve the orphanage (actually, the fire was the gnomes' fault; they didn't act out of kindness but out of guilt).   GM info / spoilers.

Timeline

2785 PB
The house that would later become Lili's Orphanage is built by a merchant named Eric Stonewell. Eric constructs the house as a living space with a shop front, complete with a hidden tunnel leading to the Brick Hill district, providing a secret tunnel to the upper city. He uses the tunnel to smuggle rare and valuable goods into the upper city without drawing the attention of the authorities. The tunnel remains a closely guarded secret within the Stonewell family.
2820 PB
After Eric Stonewell's death, his son Roland Stonewell inherits the house. Unlike his father, Roland lacks business acumen and eventually squanders the small family fortune. The house falls into disrepair, and the tunnel is forgotten.
2835 PB
A trader named Garret Thorne, unaware of the tunnel's existence, purchases the house. Garret renovates the house slightly but fails to restore it to its former glory. He uses it as a storage facility for his trade goods.
2845 PB
Garret Thorne encounters financial troubles and is forced to sell the house. It has stood vacant for several years, slowly deteriorating and becoming an eyesore in the neighbourhood.
2852 PB
Lili, a kind-hearted woman with a passion for helping children, discovers the abandoned house. She sees potential in the derelict building and decides to purchase it with the intent of transforming it into an orphanage. She initiates renovations with the assistance of local supporters.
2853 PB
Lili's Orphanage officially opens its doors, providing a safe haven for orphaned and abandoned children. The house is filled with laughter and hope as Lili works tirelessly to create a nurturing environment.
2860 PB
A devastating fire destroys a part of the orphanage. Gnome Workshop steps in to help restore the building.
2864 PB
While exploring the basement, the children discover a hidden trapdoor that leads directly to the Brick Hill district. So far, they have kept it their secret. They discovered several reinforced boxes in the tunnel but couldn't manage to open them.

"I never thought I'd sell this house, but circumstances forced my hand. I'm glad it found its way to Lili; she'll make something beautiful of it." -- Garret Thorne (previous owner)

With smiling faces, love fills every space!
Twenty hearts beat as one big cheer,
For laughter echoes loud and clear!   Lili's our mama, kind and bright,
She guides us through the day and night.
She teaches lessons, shares her smile,
Making dreams worth a little while!   We bake delicious cookies sweet,
And crafts with wood, so neat and complete!
Then to the market we joyfully tread,
Sharing our treasures, earning bread!   Some kids explore with maps in hand,
Guiding visitors across the land.
While others tidy up with glee,
Making Lili's home a place to be!   At playtime, games are fun galore,
We run and jump and laugh some more!
Building castles, tall and grand,
Friendship's magic, always at hand.   So if you're feeling sad or blue,
Come visit us, our doors are open too!

Where joy and kindness shine so bright!

Such a lovely atmosphere brought about by a kind woman. I'm sure the children are very happy in their home ^^ Though how and why did the gnomes cause the fire?

"That's a mystery!" ... well, they have their workshop right on the other side of the street, and fiddling with all the things going boom, was only a matter of time. But they will deny any involvement! :D

I love this, especially the details about the secret tunnel and the plot hooks. Great pictures, as always.

Nice Article, I like the Idea of an Orphanage being a safe haven. I love using Inkarnate Maps much like yourself. I have a Thieves Guild in my world of Evermsyst that sponsors an orphanage and dedicates using their Thieving talents to rescuing endangered and abandoned children as one of my Summer Camp Articles. Excellent layout by the way.

You really bring this city to life with how much care you give to it. <3 Lili's Orphanage seems like a fortunate place for children to wind up indeed.
