Prydian
the Neo Capedians
Prydians are Human native to the kingdom of Pryde on the western coast of Novyum, part of the major continent of Ethae, as well as the islands that surround the sea known as the Pryde Waters. Prydians have a zeal in national pride that few other cultures can boast. The people seem themselves culturally different than the rest of Novyum, claiming there are Novya (all other Normon) and there are Prydians. While ethnicly they may share the same biology, and culturally there are many traditional Novyum traits, to suggest so is an insult to the Prydians.
This cultural and ethnic pride dates back to the days of Old Capedo, of whom their nation originates. As their state grew to rival the capital, they began to see themselves as not Capedian, but rather their own people. Many attempts and failings to break away from Old Capedo only solidified this belief. Over the centuries since liberating themselves, they have allied with other nations, even joining the Republic of Lakorth, but there was always a sense of independence among the people. The subjugation under the United Kingdoms of Novyum brought that independence back to the forefront of the modern Prydians heart and mind. With the decline of the United Nations into civil wars the people of Pryde have once more asserted their independence and freedom.
While many Prydians never set foot off land, the culture has been a seafaring nation since its inception. The nation is centered around the Bay of Cogs and many cross the bay daily or weekly. The islands surrounding the Pryde Waters, though not part of Pryde, are no less fervent about their cultural heritage and strongly linked to the mainland kingdom. Pryde and her island kin have created an insulated, self-sustaining sea trade around their sea. That is not to say they do not trade with other nations, such as Parcel to their west, or mainland Novyum, it is that they make sure their culture and people are provided from before sending goods beyond the sea's borders.
Outside of sailors, it is rare to see a Prydian travel beyond his homeland. Foreigners coming into Pryde are accepted and welcomed but watched. There is little trust of non-Prydians. Even trusted friends from nations beyond the Pryde Waters never feel fulling integrated among the people.
Marriage is not taken lightly by the Prydians. Youthful affairs and partners are common, even with outsiders, but when the time to marry comes strict rules apply. A Prydian, male or female, never marries outsider their culture. To do so is to be disowned by their family. With this, many marriages are arranged by the parents. Once arranged, the couple are expected to join without issue and produce children quickly. Divorce is not an option in Prydian culture. Affairs are officially rare, though they do happen. There are no laws punishing adulterers, but there are also no laws punishing spouses who take revenge on the adulterous partner and their lover. One could even say there is cultural pride in those that do so. Finacial control is expected to be maintained by the man of the house, but inheritance laws pass the property ownership from mother to daughters. Women are expected to be the social network of the family unit, while the men work.
Prydians, overall, have similar traits to most normon of the Northern Reach of Ethae. Blonde hair is nearly universal across the mainland kingdom of Pryde, while the islanders show some some browns and reds. This grows less distinct over time as marriages link the people more and more. Women keep their hair long but will have it up and back. Shorter and free hanging hair is seen as a sign of youth and promiscuity, not the traits of a proper Prydian woman. Men maintain short, groomed hair. Long hair is seen as uncultured and wild, not a proper look for a Prydian man. The men of the islands are largely clean shaved, while mainland Pryde men will grow mustaches. Beard and bushy mustaches are looked down on in Prydian culture, viewed as outsider styles and not proper. Eye colors can range from any natural color, though browns seem the most common.
