Tiefling

Tieflings are an extremely rare race on Azimuth. They are humanoids with devilish ancestry, distinguished by the large horns on their head and known for their extravagant appearances.

Description

Appearance

Tieflings are derived from human bloodlines, and in the broadest possible sense, they still look human. However, their infernal heritage has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Tieflings have large horns that take any of a variety of shapes. They have thick tails, four to five feet long. Their canine teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes are solid colors. Their skin tones cover the full range of human coloration, but also include various shades beyond.

Statistics

Tieflings are derived from human bloodlines and as such tend to be sized similarly, being on average between 5 to 6 feet tall and weighing between 125 to 250 pounds.   Tieflings mature at the same rate as humans but live a few years longer.

History

Early history and supposed creation

In the Age of the Severance, many peoples picked up the search for the lost gods. Those learned in the arcane arts sought to recreate that power so that they might use it to further their own causes, or to become as gods themselves to fill this void. This search brought much to the advancement of Arcane learning in the world. However, some of those who sought the gods found darker things, evil regions of the Divine Planes that would connect them with the realms of demons and devils.   It is not known how the first tieflings came about, whether it was a dark pact for power, a bargain in exchange for knowledge, or by the scheming plots of fiends. However this connection was made, with the tying of their bloodline to this fiendish influence, the progeny of those involved would be forever changed.

Society

To be greeted with stares and whispers, to suffer violence and insult on the street, to see mistrust and fear in every eye: this is the lot of the tiefling. Their appearance and their nature are not their fault but the result of an ancient sin, for which they and their children and their children's children will always be held accountable.   Due to the prominence of the battle between Zenethia and Nadiria in the world of Azimuth, the sight of a tiefling brings about memories of war, corruption, and death. The cycle of good and evil has shaped the history of many races in this world, and these memories are not easily overlooked. People tend to be suspicious of tieflings, assuming that their heritage has left its mark on their personality and morality, not just their appearance.   Tieflings subsist in small minorities found mostly in human cities or towns, often in the roughest quarters of those places. Sometimes they live among other minority populations in enclaves where they are treated with more respect. Lacking a homeland, tieflings know that they have to make their own way in the world and that they have to be strong to survive. While they are distrusted and sometimes shunned, many of the other races do have some understanding that this fate is not of a tiefling’s own choosing. For the most part, only overzealously devout paladins and folk raised on the dark tales of an ancient age might actively wish harm on tieflings.   That said, tieflings do have a hard existence in places that have suffered greatly at the hands of Esturk and the demons of his armies. Santeem and Keeleon suffered much three-and-a-half centuries ago. The marks of the Tarterian War can still be seen in the lands of Tarteria, and tieflings are more heavily prejudiced there, often being driven out and away.

Tieflings in Haradren Gaer Arnad

In Haradren Gaer Arnad, tieflings meet some prejudices against their kind and may be treated with suspicion, especially in areas of mixed populace. However, elves tend to understand that a tiefling's bloodline is often not a result of their direct choices.

Tieflings in Tarteria

In Tarteria, tieflings suffer greatly due to the prejudices against their kind here. Many orcs view them as manifestations of Esturk, The World's End, and his corruption, and they are struck with distrust and disdain. Tieflings that choose to stay in the Queendom of Keeleon often find their way to more diverse sections of the continent, such as the northern port cities, where they may be more accepted.   In the Hobgoblin Khanate to the south, these feelings are exponentially harsher. Tieflings may be actively harassed, or worse. Many do not survive childhood, and those that do are often conscripted into the ranks of the chaff of the legions.

Subraces

There are many races in the world, and the threat of corruption to a bloodline is not exclusive to humanity. A member of any of them could make such deals with fiends or have interactions that result in fiendish taint on their bloodline. Though tieflings are most commonly born from human parents, other races are a very rare possibility, and each has their own name when such bloodlines manifest.

Fey'ri

The manifestation of tiefling heritage in an elven bloodline can result in a Fey'ri.   The highly political culture of high elven society often means any fey'ri born to a family are kept hidden away, never talked about and never seen. Those that exist outside of such conditions find they are often ostracized, as elves do not like to be faced with the understanding that even their bloodlines could be so corrupted.

Maeluth

The manifestation of tiefling heritage in a dwarven bloodline can result in a Maeluth.   Maeluth are a source of great dishonor to dwarves. Though loyalty to clan and family are strong in dwarves, maeluth have been the source of entire clans falling from prominence.

Tanarukk

The manifestation of tiefling heritage in an orcish bloodline can result in a Tanarukk.   Hate and distrust against all things fiendish and demonic are strong in orcish lands. Many tanarukk do not survive long. Those that do are shunned and pushed away from society. Ironically, their powerful forms from their heritage are well adapted to survive the Tarterian wilds.
