Ms Rachel Stevens (a.k.a. Suplex)
Rachel Stevens is a street fighter turned superhero with greatly enhanced strength and endurance. Raised in the slums of Bathala city, Rachel is passionate about protecting the downtrodden and neglected, using her superhero work to fund community projects and serving as the city's street-level defender. As a founding member of the Vigil (the first to be recruited in fact), she brings a streetwise perspective to the team and helps to balance out some of the more hard-headed personalities therein
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Rachel is extremely fit, her powers keeping her in peak physical condition without the need for an exercise regimen (beyond the occasional supervillain fight).
Body Features
After losing Jasmine, she got a memorial tattoo on her right bicep in her honour as it was her that introduced Rachel to street fighting, and that way, she'd be with her during every punch.
Identifying Characteristics
Rachel is often most easily recognised by her bright red hair. Something she's been incorporating into her personal brand since her street fighting days.
Special abilities
Rachel is a mutant, meaning her powers of greatly enhanced strength and endurance are an innate part of her physiology. She is able to lift in excess of 500 tons and can shrug off small-arms fire without much trouble.
Apparel & Accessories
In lieu of a superhero costume, Rachel prefers to dress in casual clothes, a black shirt under a red leather jacket, and fingerless gloves, calling back to her days as a street fighter.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
During Rachel's youth she was no stranger to hardship and at thirteen years of age, she fled home to escape an abusive situation, leaving her homeless and without any support. She didn't feel comfortable at first in the slums but was able to keep herself safe, using her powers to keep miscreants at a distance while she worked to survive.
Eventually she met another street kid; a seventeen-year-old named Jasmine who quickly took Rachel under her wing, helping her make her way in the slums. The two formed a strong sisterly bond, with Jasmine eventually introducing her to the street fighting scene, becoming something like a manager to the rising star that Rachel became.
As she got older, Rachel found herself the subject of admiration by the new generations of street kids and urchins, and started to work outside of the ring to keep peace in the slums, finding purpose in protecting the downtrodden. Life was good until the night of the raid.
Under cover of night, while Rachel was busy in the ring, the Bathala City Police Department (including an investigator from the missing persons team doing some voluntary overtime by the name of Alec Upton) staged a raid on the rail yard where many of the local homeless and destitute had made their homes. Police stormed the area where the fights were taking place and begun placing people under arrest. Rachel helped some of the street kids to escape and held off a few of the officers before attempting to flee but her actions had attracted some attention.
While a lot of the officers were reluctant to chase down an obvious superhuman, Investigator Upton, a closeted superhuman himself, decided to pursue. He chased her far from the raid and the two fought to a stalemate, neither wiling to give in easily. Eventually they were forced to negotiate, with Alec's hard authoritarian stance being slowly worn down by Rachel's moralistic viewpoint, and eventually he agreed to hear her out.
Over the coming months, the two would become friends and Rachel would show him the difference between something being illegal and immoral, opening his eyes to the very real things people sometimes have to do to survive on the fringes of society.
Education
As a runaway at age fifteen, Rachel never finished public schooling. Despite this, she's gifted with an aptitude for practical and emotional intelligence, and is able to understand complex topics without undue difficulty.
In the years since dropping out, Rachel has shown an interest in further education, having done some make-up modules in her spare time and taking a number of supplementary qualifications in electrical and mechanical engineering which have occasionally come in handy during her heroing career.
Employment
As a member of the Vigil, a government-funded initiative, Rachel is given a generous government stipend for her living expenses and, being one of the only openly-acting heroes in the city, has also been able to make a decent income from monetising her public persona, including some modelling and sponsorship deals, and even a licenced biography.
Morality & Philosophy
Rachel is well-acquainted with the grey areas of morality, having friends among drug-users and prostitutes, but has a strict code of conduct that prohibits harming the less fortunate. She believes strongly that just because something is illegal, doesn't make it wrong, and something being legal doesn't make it right.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
She sees how often people who need help are simply swept out of view by the elite and takes it upon herself to become the protector of the downtrodden and neglected, and uses the money and prestige from her superhero work to fund community projects and help people in need. Rachel is passionate about her cause and will even fight with other heroes who claim moral superiority over people doing what they must to survive.
Virtues & Personality perks
Fighting Skills: Despite her raw strength, Rachel is an extremely proficient technical fighter, preferring to get up close and personal with her opponents to deliver devastating precision blows rather than wide swings with the risk of collateral damage. When requiring a little more brute force, she's been known to employ manoeuvres that wouldn't look out of place in a professional wrestling ring, a habit that earned her the nickname Suplex, despite her favourite move being more of a waist-lift side slam.
Practical Knowledge: A practical thinker, Rachel has a natural aptitude for problems that she can interact with up close and personal. She's educated in both electrical and mechanical engineering and can often see the simple solution that others may miss.
Social Skills: Rachel is an outgoing and jovial person and naturally forms fast friendships with others. She also finds it easy to adjust to new and unique social situations, allowing her to serve as an ambassador for the Vigil. This can however, leave her open to harm when the people she's interacting with don't share her values and has occasionally left her in a pretty bad situation.
Vices & Personality flaws
Stubbornness: Rachel is a highly opinionated person and has a very hard head when it comes to certain issues. This can sometimes lead to her not seeing the grander picture of a situation or cause friction with others when she gets overly defensive about her position.
Addictive Personality: Having grown up around the people she did, Rachel has tried or known someone who has tried near enough every chemical substance there is. While she personally had a preference for straight booze, she has seen that losing control as someone who can fell a building with a punch is less than ideal, and has tried to avoid addictive substances in recent years.
Social
Religious Views
One of the few parts of Rachel's childhood that she hasn't actively tried to leave behind is her faith. Rachel is a non-practicing Christian, believing that God's will influences her life, but doesn't tend to attend church beyond special services or when she feels the need for external guidance. Despite this, she's on good terms with the slums' local preacher, Father Thomas.
Social Aptitude
Rachel is a jovial extrovert, preferring the company of others over solitude, and it's quite easy to see why. Over the years since coming under Jasmine's tutelage, Rachel has developed into a social butterfly, able to fit in just as well among drug-dealers and slum lords as she does among the important members of Bathala's social elite in her role as occasional ambassador for the Vigil alongside Brainiac.
Rachel has a deep wellspring of confidence as reinforced by her experience of always being the strongest person in the room. This can occasionally make her seem arrogant or conceited, but she's quick to correct herself and apologise if she takes things too far.
Mannerisms
After years of bare-knuckle brawling, Rachel has developed a habit of cracking her knuckles and will tend to stretch and curl her fingers when bored.
Warning
Reports have come in from numerous reliable sources about the presence of a creature colloquially known as TrollRach, known to emerge in the middle hours of the morning from Rachel's bedroom. The creature may look like the hero we all know and love, but features significant bags under the eyes, messy hair, and is particularly dangerous when hungry, but can be appeased with offerings of pancakes and coffee, after which she will return to her domain and release the real Rachel for another day.
