Ladysmith

The town of Ladysmith, British Columbia was once a peaceful seaside town located on Vancouver Island off the coast of Western Canada, Earth.   Early one July morning, the town found itself under the effect of what they now refer to as The Blacklight Event. A strange field encompassed an area roughly 14.5 kilometres wide, formed as a perfect sphere, and transported the entire town as well as the surrounding communities of Cassidy, Yellow Point, Cedar, and much of the Nanaimo International Airport to the world of Eiden, deep within the region known as the Disputed Lands within the Pactlands.   Now occupying the area near the Aegel Coast of the Disputed Lands, the residents of the town quickly banded together in an effort to discover what happened, and ensure their survival in the foreign landscape they found themselves in.

Demographics

Much of the town's population is elderly, as Ladysmith was often seen as a popular retirement area. However it also boasts a high population of trade workers and youth.

Government

Ladysmith was initially run by the Municipal Government, however as many members of the town council, as well as the mayor himself were not present during The Blacklight Event, governance of the town quickly passed over to the Ladysmith Emergency Committee the day of the Event.   Operating under the authority of the Canadian Emergencies Act of 1988, the Committee then handled all major decisions regarding the town and its role within the Disputed Lands in the days and weeks following their arrival in the Pactlands.

Industry & Trade

When the Blacklight Event occured, the town was transported in total to the Pactlands, along with all of its constituent entities, including modern technology, machine infrastructure, human and other natural resources.   The Emergency Committee wasted no time in making contact with the surrounding settlements within the Disputed Lands, providing modern mining, logging, agricultural and machining practices to small medieval communities surrounding the area affected by the Blacklight Event in exchange for necessary resources.

Infrastructure

The town of Ladysmith has most of the amenities of any major municipality in Canada, with its own reservoir nestled in the mountains above the town proper, a functional sewage treatment plant, a homeless shelter, a functional clinic and hospital, several schools and recreational facilities. A decommissioned coal power plant was able to be rigged up to provide power to certain parts of the town after the Blacklight Event.   Communications infrastructure include an operational switchboard for analog telephone communications, and several cell phone and radio towers.   There are several marinas for both leisure boating and commercial purposes, as well as a transient boating community on the water known as the Dog Patch.

Districts

While before the Blacklight Event, the town of Ladysmith and its component districts stood on its own, Ladysmith is now considered to have absorbed the surrounding communities of Cassidy, Cedar, Yellow Point and the Nanaimo International Airport.

History

Ladysmith was founded on Earth in 1898 by coal magnate James Dunsmuir. Originally called Oyster Harbour, the town was founded to provide living space for miners at Dunsmuir's Extension Mines south of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.   In 1900, Dunsmuir changed the name of the town to Ladysmith in honour of the British lifting the Siege of Ladysmith, South Africa during the Second Boer War, and the town was officially incorporated on June 3, 1904.   Ladysmith's streets were named after British military personnel that fought in the war, including the founder of the Boy Scouts, Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell.   Ladysmith experienced a period of unrest during the Vancouver Island coal miner's strike from 1912-1914, during which time Canadian milita was dispatched to put down unrest and protect private property. Since then, Ladysmith has been home to a thriving logging and fishing industry.
