Playable Races

Any race listed in an approved sourcebook can be used in D&D, no questions asked. While we generally leave racial lore open-ended for you to come up with your own more specific stories, some races have unique backstory options you can freely reference in your character's history if you wish as listed in each of the other articles in this section.   Again, there is no requirement that your choice of character race belong to the culture or lore of any race established in this section. The universe is a vast, sprawling place of infinite possibility. If you want to be a human farmer who's been living on the edge of the universe in a place never before referenced in the lore of the game, then by the gods, you can do it. We'll reference this elsewhere, but we call this the I Know a Guy rule. Your imagination is the only real limit (and also making sure like, mechanically it's a legal race to play, but otherwise yeah).   If a race you wish to play doesn't have any description listed on any of these pages, that doesn't mean the race doesn't exist in Chromatia or Chromanexus. Any race can be found in Chromatia, Realmspace, and beyond if you know where to look, it just means the race's established lore isn't notably different than its Chromatian counterpart. However, individual Domains may have restrictions on which races are common or available, if you choose to begin your character's story in another player's domain.   As we also support custom races as detailed in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (TCoE), we occasionally list player-made submissions here too (with credits, of course, so you can ask them questions about the race if interested).   Aside from this, as we've noted elsewhere in this book, you may not play as a child. Whatever race you choose to play, your character must be aged appropriately as an adult of their respective races. You're free to reference adventuring lifestyles and childhood dangers in your backstory, but in actual play, you must be an adult. End of story.

Legacy Races

Ever since the release of Monsters of the Multiverse, several pre-existing races were marked as "Legacy" on D&D Beyond. If your race of choice has both a current and a legacy variant, please use the current variant. Otherwise, if the race only exists as a legacy option, it's free to choose (until a "current" replacement is added to the game, at which point you'll need to update).
