City of Orme

The city of Orme is a small settlement located in southern Heoria, along the northern bank of the Leff river. It is a site of great historic importance because of The Accords of Orme Vale, which were signed here as well as being the site of many mage migrations into eastern Arros.

Demographics

The vast majority (Over 95%) of the town's population consists of mages, and about 8 out of every 10 mage is a Shapeshifter. It is the largest shapeshifter community in Heoria, and one of the largest on the continent.

Government

The town is run by a council made up of the leader of the town's numerous Shapeshifter Clans. These leaders are not democraticaly elected within most clans, but they are elected to the council. There are about 200 different clans in and around the city, but only 25 spots on the council. Every 5 years, all 25 positions are up for grabs and all 200+ candidates are eligible. The leader of the Mirktree clan, the largest clan in the city, is made the mayor/Lord of the town, castle and surounding lands.

Defences

The town's defences primarily rely on the stone castle around which the city was built. A 3 metre high stone wall surounds the town's outer edge. The bridge over the Leff river can be drawn up to prevent a crossing. Orme is also surounded by hills and forests, which makes it difficult for a large army to attack it, though smaller groups of raiders on foot or horseback could and have reach the city in the past.

Industry & Trade

Lumber and minning are the city's main industry. The forest surounding the city provides abundant timber, while the hills on either side of the valley are rich in iron and coal.

Natural Ressources

The city is located in a ressource rich region. Timber is abundant thanks to the forests surounding the town, while the hills nearby contain valuable ores and minerals, such as iron and coal.

Geography

The town is located within the Orme Valley, a region full of thick forests, and split in two by the Leff river, which flows in its centre, the valley is surounded by hills and more forests to the south, east and west, while it gradualy opens up into a flat forest towards the north.

Climate

The town and surrounding region has a continental climate, which means that it has warm summers and cold winters, with abundant snow in the surounding hills. During particulary harsh winters, snow falls occurs over the city itself.

History

The town is relatively young compared to others in the region, but it has a rich and unique history. It was created a few years by the alliance of the three Clans, then its existance as a shapeshifter settlement was solidified by the Orme Vale accords in 211bc.

For the rest of the second age, the town grew steadely as shapehsifters and other soulmages tricled in, mostly from Western and Central Arros. While some did not stay in Orme, as they instead moved throughout Heoria, establishing various small settlements, some did stay in Orme, which contributed to the town's rise in population.

After the Fall and in the first couple of decades of the third Age, Orme's population balloned as it became an important ralying point for Soulmages in Eastern Arros as even more refugees from around the continent ralied there.

In Orme Castle, many parleys, negociations and political debates were held about the future of Soulmages in the region. Today, Orme continues to be an important political centre for the region's mage population and is considered a refuge by many shapshifters from the persecution they face in cities further west on the continent.
