Slaverin: 01 - Waking Up
General Summary
Waking up in a field, the Dragonbone Vanguard feel like something is off. As Szarden sits up, he sees a goblin charge at the group, spear at the ready. A large blue tiefling suddenly jumps in the way and takes the full thrust of the goblin spear right to his heart. As he collapses, the Vanguard is instantly flooded with memories of lives not their own.
Puzzled but quickly realizing the direness of their situation, they reflexively spring into action and dismember a few goblins. As the group surveys the scene and tries to come to terms with their conflicting memories, large red dragonborn seems puzzled that they don’t remember anything. He tells them that his name is Meklen Tiammen (“T” to his friends) and they were all hired by Rollo to clear an infestation of goblins that was annoying the nearby city of Rueside. He loots the bodies while explaining that he’s also looking for something special to retrieve.
The group remembers this and Meklen seems familiar to Nym who now thinks of himself as Igan Dot. A small dwarf named Borin Stonehammer remembers being Sszarden, a durgar with a Scottish accent named Grimgar remembers being Zen. The small halfing woman Harding Quickstop remembers being Garus, and the halfing Edan Galan (Rooster) Rooster has memories of Lucy. The large half-orc Arcon Domine with a high-pitched voice has vague memories of being Mithac. Deducing that the tiefling that was killed when we awoke must have been Polonius, Arcon runs over and sobs at his corpse. The rest of the group shrugs and starts following T.
We head back to the The Pit Inn to find Rollo and collect our reward. Rollo is surprised to see us as the infestation he hired us to find is 30 miles outside of town. After some pressuring, Rollo admits that a client hired him to find a cylindrical topaz crystal that the goblins should have. It seems that this is the real reason for killing the infestation, but Rollo doesn’t seem to know what his client wants with it.
We head out for the location Rollo marked on our map which is about 30 miles SW of Rueside. After a long day of walking we come across 4 horses tied up to a tree with no one around. After some daring acrobatics by Harding, we take all 4 horses and some of the group finish the ride on horseback while others prefer to continue walking.
Just at nightfall, we arrive at the goblin camp. Jumping into the first hut, Borin casts Thunderclap and splatters the 2 goblins inside. This has awakened the rest of the camp and goblins and wolves begin to approach our group. While trying to navigate the darkness, we are able to take out our foes as we come across them, heading farther north into the camp until we come to a river with a broken bridge.
Igan uses their mage hand to tie a rope to a tree across the river. Everyone except for Harding is able to use the tightrope to walk across the rope. After getting on the rope, Igan begins flashing light and dark and gains the ability to see through anything within 6 feet of him. Harding climbs up and the group spots a campfire ahead. While some members split into flanking position, Harding (disguised as a goblin) walks Igan up the path, pretending to have captured a prisoner. The jig is up when they see them and ask what happened and Harding realizes she can’t speak goblin, and Igan forgets that they can, distracted by the fact that he is suddenly floating 10 feet off the ground for no apparent reason.
Quickly ambushed, the goblins and wolves at the camp are killed and looted. The group follows them into the tunnels behind the fire, slaughtering every goblin in sight. Once the camp is cleared, we realize that they were unarmed and smaller than normal. We likely just murdered the women and children goblins.
But on the bright side, we do find the crystal, so we console ourselves with that as we head back to the Pit Inn.
