Mars
Ecosystem
The first colonies on Mars were totally sealed to the outside environment, requiring colonists to wear fully sealed and pressurized suits any time they left the walls of a compound. Oxygen was either harvest on-planet in deep ice mining operations or shipped to the surface of the world from asteroids or Earth itself. After The Martian Super-flood however, many new environmental opportunities presented themselves. In addition to some oxygen and other elements entering the atmosphere from where it had been contained deep underground, Martians began establishing algae plants. This process most often consisted of filling a crater with water (or finding one that had already been filled) and seeding the water with the proper chemicals to support algae life before then implanting the algae itself.
As more and more of these plants were established, as well as various other terraforming methods, the Martian atmosphere became more and more breathable. Other plants and flora were planted around the planet and soon began to spread on their own, further contributing to the planet's ecosystem. Today, Mars is considered to have a breathable atmosphere, even though even Martian physiology only allows them to stay outside with no environmental protection or breathing gear for 2-3 days before the oxygen depravation would cause them to pass out. An Earth-born Human would last only a few hours without special training. Because of this, many Martian settlements are still contained under environmentally sealed domes or, increasingly more commonly, the living structures simply have advanced internal environmental control apparatuses installed in them, with curfews in some countries insuring safety from asphyxiation.
