Darkborn
Until recently the least understood and most disrespected of the infused races, Darkborn understandably have a number of nicknames, none of which are particularly nice. Called shades, shadies, darkspawn, and probably the least creatively, evilborn. Darkborn have received a lot of hate throughout their existence. They were viewed as innately evil, being created as the favored minions of Cerelea from captive elves and humans corrupted with dark magics and vile experiments. For most of their history they served as her most powerful servants and slaves, until a few leaders emerged who broke them free of their bondage. The majority of the darkborn migrated to the foothills of the Morningold Mountains, settling in and around a depopulated dwarven outpost they renamed New Haven. Though a few did remain loyal to the blue dragon lord, most are now seeking new lives as free individuals. Cerelea created the darkborn to be her elite magic users and so, like the elves they partially descend from, they are all infused with dark magic which they can command at least to some degree. The other factor which likely causes so much hate for the darkborn is their alien appearance. While their general body shapes are perhaps most similar to halfelves, the differences are major. First is their skin, which can be any color of the spectrum, but most commonly red, purple, or blue. Next is the pair of horns sprouting from their heads, again coming in a wide range of shapes and textures. Their eyes can be nearly any color in the rainbow, but most distinctively their sclera are black instead of white, which people tend to find off putting, alluring, or some combination of the two.And finally are their long, semi-prehensile tails which are often forked or barbed at the end. The whole thing adds up to an appearance many find deeply unsettling. Prior to their exodus the darkborn were primarily made, rather than born, and so only retained their first names during their enslavement as that was all that was necessary. They have taken to adopting “virtue names” as surnames, some sort of descriptor they value or seek to embody. Names like “hope,” “strength,” “power,” and “will” are common, but a virtue name can be almost anything. It is only now, post exodus, that they have started choosing partners for themselves and have begun adopting the traditional family names of other cultures. Similar to hobgoblins, darkborn are collectively working to break the stigmas of the past and earn the trust of the other races they now interact with in a much more peaceful manner.
