The Shards
The Shards are what remains of a lost city of the Nameless Empire. Built centuries ago as one of the metropolitan hubs of the region, it was a transport and manufacturing center, and may have even been a provincial capital at one time. The destruction of the empire led to a shifting of the Sypi River and the flooding of the city, in addition to the devastation caused by the catastrophe itself. The city was lost beneath the waters, but the engineering of the empire is well on display as their mighty towers stand tall still, jutting out of the river like shards of rocks, which grant the site its name.
Purpose / Function
Originally the city that would become the Shards is believed to have once been an important trading post and industrial center of the Nameless Empire. Excavations and discoveries by the Alsonan Rangers have supported this belief, and materials recovered from the Battle of the Shards have been poured over by Alsonan scholars for decades since. It is believed a considerable river port once existed there, and some even allege a religious significance to the Shards, claiming that The King had a personal connection to it during his mortal life.
Alterations
The magnificent engineering of the Nameless Empire has been long demonstrated at the Shards, and despite the constant flow of the river, they have remained upright and sticking out, with only a handful of collapsing in the centuries since the end of the empire. Pilgrims from Alsona were not uncommon here for a time and a small village emerged along the eastern riverside. Unfortunately, it was discovered by the giants that the Shards made for an easy crossing point for them, and a major invasion was staged. The Alsonan Rangers and the Sypi River Watch played key roles in the battle that came, wherein they were actually outnumbered by the invading giants. In desperation one of the Rangers' wizards cast a spell that turned the Shards into a raging rapids, and sped up the very flow of the river. The river was turned into a torrent, moving at great speeds. Thus the Sypi was turned into a wall of its own, protecting the western parts of Emicara from another massed invasion like it nearly faced.
