Sypi River
The Sypi River is the greatest river in the known world, and stretches across the Emicaran continent, splitting the settled lands of the southeast from the rest of the world. It has proven a formidable natural barrier, and most historians suggest that without it serving as a guardian, giants from the west may have overrun civilization centuries ago. At its thinnest point it is nearly four miles wide, and at the widest point, it stretches nearly twenty miles. The source comes from the far north, flowing occasionally with debris in addition to water. It is of course most famed for the area of former passage between the Shards and Raccourci. Ever since the Battle of the Shards in 872, the river between these points flows at an incredible 70 knots in speed. It has become even more of a barrier since then, and many of the River Watch have reported giants drowning in attempts to cross.
The Sypi River slows in its passage through the Kingdom of Losana, and has numerous extensions flowing into what is the Dread Bayou. The river seems to become almost sluggish at points until ultimately it feeds into the Circle Sea. In Losana, it acts as a major source of trade and commerce, particularly after the Battle of Spider Bend reopened the river to shipping down into Riveraineville and beyond. The river also acts as a manner of transit between the riverside towns and cities of southern Losana. Both passengers and cargo alike finds this route remarkably safe, and usually more lightly taxed than land based caravans.
The Sypi River to the north flows well past the Tenashi Kingdom and Valtkos Wingo. These two nations have begun cooperating recently for security purposes after the Wingo War caused Ranger patrols along the river to come to an end. Giant raids and commerce north of the Shards is nearly nonexistent as neither elves nor dwarves have any interest in developing the river. The small Tenashi towns along the Sypi are more of garrisons designed to observe and prevent giant raids across the river into the kingdom. Any further upriver, the Sypi River is completely uncharted, and only theoretical maps exist portraying the distance it must travel into the wildlands of the north.
