Kythyss

Kythyss was a small coastal town located in the kingdom of Callidyrr on the island of Alaron within the Moonshae Isles.

Demographics

Kythyss was the southernmost settlement found on Alaron. It was located at the tail end of the High King's Road where the Sea of Swords and the South Great Head met. Kythyss was found in the county of Stirgewick.

Government

Officially Kythyss has been under the reign of the King of Alaron, as Callidyrr's southern most city and port. However after years of war and rebuilding, King Derid Kendric has not spent proper time protecting the location.  The city had been run by a Magistrate and Governor appointed by the king for the past several years before falling ill and passing away. For the past 1-1/2 to 2 years the city has been run by a self-proclaimed 'Marchioness', Agda Persdotter, who was the sole survivor of the disaster from the destruction of the local temple, where she walked out of the ruins after 4 days of searching and removing stones. The Marchioness has dedicated to the historical pride of Kythyss and has worked to keep the Amnians at bay from expanding their influence.

Defences

Defenses seem to be an undersized local army and militia. The Marchioness is rumored to be training a royal guard as higher trained soldiers, but the numbers of the force are unknown. Several members of this guard can usually be seen escorting the Marchioness as she travels through the town or as she accepts visitors.    The previous Magistrate decided to hire mercenaries to help protect the town. The same mercenaries were bribed to serve the needs of Viceroy Erliza Daressin of Westphal. These mercenaries were led by Ghelvan "the Buzzard" and have named themselves The Masks to pick on local legends.

Districts

Dock District Government Center - Central section of the city with city square, promenade and city hall.   West Wing - Western parts of the city, where the Masks keep their headquarters and working warehouses line the shores. Generally under control of Amn but claimed allegiance to the Marchioness.

History

Kythyss was originally an outpost of the Masked Company, a mercenary force tasked with guarding against the encroaching forces of the Ruathym Empire. They marked off the small peninsula for later building and built their hexagonal fort where it still stands today near the inner seawall (which, along with the outer seawall, was raised by a conjured Earth Elemental). With Ruathym's conquest of these lands, their mission was a failure, but the Masks remained, offering their services to the new Marquess and watching the small settlement grow around them. eight hundred and fifteen years later, Kythyss is a well-defended settlement with churches, a park, some farmland within the walls, and thriving maritime trade for a settlement of its size. Eventually the Masks dissolved with time and their keep became abandoned, over time used for other military operations from the Marquess and then later Magistrates under the rule of Callidyr.  Officially, the city is governed by a few guildmasters and a representative of the kingdom.   Farmland has been cleared (and small villages / thorpes grown up) in an area roughly 12 miles around Oceanwatch. The farmers and tradesfolk in this area see to Kythyss for their protection and tithe a portion of their production to Kythyss (which is in turn split between the current Masks and the Kythyss government). The Masks tally these tithes as payment for their mercenary forces to operate in the local area.

Points of interest

There is an abandoned and collapsed Ruin along the ridge of the eastern shore of a once decently large temple. The Temple remains in ruins with collapsed stone scattering the area. The collapse occurred approximately 2 years ago during a service to the local god Chauntea, the Earth Mother. Many of the local followers and priestesses of Chauntea perished in the collapse. There is a small memorial of the site nearby.   The Kings Way Trade road travels up through the north to trade with other villages along the western shore of Aleran.
